4、dayandIparticularywanttothankEricSchaferandZhuXuanbaoforthatextraordinaryEnglishandChineseintroduction.ThatwassuchapowerfulsymbolofeverythingIwanttotalkwithyouabouttoday.Yousee,bylearningeachotherslanguages-andbyshowingsuchcuriosityandrespectforeachotherscultures-Mr.SchaferandMs.Zhuandallofyouarebui
5、ldingbridgesofunderstandingthatleadtosomuchmore.AndImheretodaybecauseIknowthatourfuturedependsonconnectionsliketheseamongyourpeoplelikeyouacrosstheglobe.ThatswhywhenmyhusbandandItravelabroad,wedontjustvisitpalacesandparliamentandmeetwithheadsofstate.Wealsocometoschoolslikethisonetomeetwithstudentsli
6、keyou.Becausewebelievethatrelationshipsbetweennationsarenotjustaboutrelationshipbetweengovernmentsorleaderstheyreaboutrelationshipsbetweenpeople,particularlyouryoungpeople.SoweviewstudyabroadprogramsnotjustasaneducationalopportunityforstudentsbutalsoasavitalpartofAmericasforeignpolicy.Yousee,through
7、thewondersofmoderntechnology,ourworldismoreconnectedthaneverbefore.Ideascancrossoceanwiththeclickofabutton.Companiescandobusinessandcompletewithcompaniesacrosstheglobe.Andwecantext,emailandskypewithpeopleoneverycontinent.Sostudyingabroadisntjustafunwaytospendasemester-itsquicklybecomingthekeytosucce
8、ssinourglobaleconomy.Becausegettingaheadintodaysworkplacesisntjustaboutgettinggoodgradesortestscoresinschoolitsalsoabouthavingrealexperiencewiththeworldbeyondyourborders-experiencewithlanguages,culturesandsocietiesverydifferentfromyourown.Or,astheChinesesayinggoes:“Itisbettertotraveltenthousandmiles
9、thantoreadtenthousandbooks.”Butletsbeclear,studyingabroadisaboutsomuchmorethanimprovingyourownfuture-itsalsoaboutshapingthefutureofyourcountriesandoftheworldweallshare.Becausewhenitcomestothedefiningchallengesofourtime-whetheritsclimatechange,oreconomicopportunity,orthespreadofnuclearweapons.thesear
10、esharedchallenges.Noonecountrycanconfrontthemalone.theonlywayforwardistogether.Thatswhyitssoimportantforyoungpeoplelikeyoutoliveandstudyineachotherscountries.Becausethatshowyoudevelopthathabitofcooperation-youdoitbyimprovingyourselfinsomeonesculturebylearningeachothersstoriesandbygettingpastthestere
11、otypesandmisconceptionsthattoooftendivideus.Thatshowyoucometounderstandhowmuchweallshare.Andthatshowyourealizethatweallhaveastakeineachotherssuccess-thatcuresdiscoveredhereinBeijingcouldsavelivesinAmericathecleanenergytechnologiesfromSiliconValleyinCaliforniacouldimprovetheenvironmenthereinChinathat
12、thearchitectureofanancienttempleinXiancouldinspirethedesignofnewbuildingsinDallasorDetroit.Andthatswhentheconnectionsyoumakeasclassmatesorlabmatescanblossomintosomethingmore.ThatswhathappenedwhenAbigailCoplinbecameanAmericanFulbrightScholarhereatPekingUniversity.Sheandhercolleaguespublishedpaperstog
13、etherintopsciencejournalsandtheybothresearchpartnershipsthatlastedlongaftertheyreturnedtotheirhomecountries.ProfessorNiuKefromPekingUniversitywasFulbrightScholarintheU.yearandhereported,andIquote,“themostmemorableexperiencewerewithmyAmericanfriends.”Theselastingbondsrepresentthetruevalueofstudyingab
14、roadandIamthrilledthatmoreandmorestudentsaregettingthisopportunity.ChinaiscurrentlythefifthmostpopulardestinationforAmericansstudyingabroad.Andtoday,thehighestnumberofexchangestudentsinfromChina.Butstill,toomanystudentsneverhavethischanceandsomethatdoarehesitanttotakeit.Theymayfeellikestudyabroadiso
15、nlyforwealthystudents,orstudentsfromcertainkindsofuniversities.Ortheymaythinktothemselves:“Well,thatsoundsfun,buthowwillitreallybeusefulinmylife?”Iunderstandwheretheseyoungpeoplearecomingfrom,becauseIfeltthesamewaywhenIwasincollege.Yousee,Icamefromaworkingclassfamilyanditneverevenoccurredtometostudyabroad.Myparentdidntgettoattendcollege,andIwasfocusedongettingintoauniversityandearningmydegreesoIcouldgetajobandsupportmyself.Andforalotofyoungpeoplelikemewhoarestrugglingtoaffordaregularsemesterofschoolpayingforplaneticketsorlivingexpensehalfwayaroundtheworldjustisntpossible.Andthats
