3、ept of face or having face.,Facea culture thing,Face is a concept not hard to understand and face is very similar to the notion of reputation. As a general sociological statement, Western cultures tend to focus on the individual as an independent, self-reliant being.,In raising children, the focus is on helping them develop a strong sense of personal integrity and individuality.,CHINESE FACE,In contrast,

7、for some 4,000 years, Chinese culture has downplayed concept of the individualinstead emphasizing the supremacy of the family and group.,It was all about bringing honor to your clan. With the emphasis on the collective, the sense of self blurred so much that it practically didnt exist. In fact, indi

8、vidualism was seen as immoral.,Face,Having face,The concept of face can be loosely described as someones social status or reputation in the eye of others.,Throughout a Chinese persons life it must be maintained and enhanced through giving to and receiving from others in both words and actions.,Face,

9、Losing face,In situations where someone of reputation has made a mistake or done wrong, and the error is made attributable to that person in public, then that one person has “lost face“ - their reputation in the eyes of their peers has been reduced.,To make someone lose face or even unknowingly is a

10、 huge dishonor and could mean the end of a relationship.,TIPS FOR GIVING FACE:,Praising someone publicly (especially in front of their elders or boss).,Giving high marks on customer evaluation forms .,Giving sincere compliments and showing that youre enjoying oneself when being treated out.,Giving a

11、n expensive gift, especially an imported one.,Avoid these face-losing situation,Openly criticizing, challenging, disagreeing with, or denying someone. Calling someone out on a lie. Not showing proper deference to elders or superiors. Interrupting someone while they are talking. Being angry at someone mutual loss of face for both parties.
