1、,Selected readings of Journalistic English 英语报刊选读 Instructor: Lv Shuming email: ,Course Description: Journalistic Reading is an elective course designed to introduce students to varied aspects of English newspapers and magazines, including the features of headlines, the styles and structures of news

2、 stories and classification of news writing. This course will give students valuable insights into different aspects of English-speaking countries, mainly UK and US, such as economy, culture and politics. But it will also help make students become effective and critical readers. The teacher will cho

3、ose some extracurricular materials from some major news media to supplement the textbook. The students are expected to read one or two news agencies /newspapers/magazines online regularly and pursue excellence in communication (reading and writing) skills. Various activities will be organized to mot

4、ivate students, eg. weekly presentation and class discussion.,Whats the difference between this course & extensive reading?,Benefits of reading newspapers,Keeps us informed of whats happening around the world and help us foster an interest in international hot issues. (educated people read newspaper

5、s/news magazines. In fact, it is important for us English majors to become English newspaper readers.) Exposure to up-to-date English reports will surely help improve our communication skills. (vocabulary in different fields, fluency in reading and more topics to talk about with foreign friends) New

6、 ideas and fresh perspectives on international affairs, especially Chinese affairs, will not only let us better understand foreign countries but also know ourselves better. (So, its fair to say that English newspapers offer us a window on the world.) It is a very useful means to keep pace with the l

7、atest development of science & technology.,We are going to spend the 16 weeks on a brief introduction to news reports and 9 texts in the textbook and special reports on China. The selected texts are LL. 1, 7, 12, 13, 17, 20, 21, 25, 31. One week will be specifically set aside for Chinese affairs. Se

8、veral groups will be assigned to make presentations on foreign reports about Chinese affairs. Each group need to revolve around one topic, for example reports about the debate between google and the Chinese government and the appreciation of Renminbi, environmental pollution, etc.,What are we going

9、to do?,Weekly presentation,Every week a group of two make a presentation (ppt) of top 10 news of the past week. The top ten news should cover a wide range of topics, including education, sports, culture, entertainment, economy and politics, etc. Each news item should contain the headline, the news l

10、ead, a photo/diagram, and the source( website address) At least one of them is about China. You are not encouraged to cite much from China Daily or Global Times.
