7、them carried a white paper fan with them. 译文2：Fanning themselves with white paper fans, three men advanced slowly, all some forty to fifty years old.,英语的形合（hypotaxis）和汉语的意合(parataxis),英语属于印欧语系，汉语属于汉藏语系，句法上各有特色，差异甚多。在句子构成方面，汉语重意合，而英语重形合。 当代美国著名翻译家Nida在其Translating meaning（1983）一书中提出：就英语与汉语而言，也许在语言学上最
8、重要的一个区别在于形合（hypotaxis）与意合（parataxis）的差异。英语重形合，即句中各意群、成分之间都用适当连接词（connectives）组成复句，形式上比较严谨，缺乏弹性；汉语则重意合，也就是更多地依靠语序直接组合复句，由于其句子成分用逻辑意义贯穿起来，结构灵活、简洁，不会引起误解。,英语重形合，汉语重意合，这同英美民族重形式逻辑思维与抽象思维和汉民族重形象思维有关。英语结构紧凑严密；汉语结构简练明快。英语常以主谓结构为主干，层层搭架其他结构向外扩展。,“西洋语的结构好像连环，虽则环环都联络起来，毕竟有联络的痕迹；中国语的结构好像无缝天衣，只是一块一块的硬凑，凑起来还不让他有
9、痕迹。西洋语法是硬的，没有弹性的；中国语法是软的，富于弹性的。惟其是硬的，所以西洋语法有许多呆板的要求，如每一个clause里必须有一个主语；惟其是软的，所以中国语法只以达意为主，相关的两家是可以硬凑在一起，不用任何的connective word.” 王力,“汉语的句子结构好比一根竹子，一节一节地连下去；而英语的句子结构好比一串葡萄，主干可能很短，累累果实附着在上面。” 庄绎传,翻译的启示和意义,既然汉语句子以“意合”为特点，没有词形变化，也没有非谓语动词、独立主格等形式结构，特别是在许多情况下省略连接词，那么在英译汉时，原句中的很多词类可以用汉语的动词来转换；连接词许多情况下可省略不译，越
10、是使用连接词少的句子越是符合汉语的习惯；介词短语、非谓语动词、定语从句、独立主格和结构复杂的长句在不少情况下都可译为短语或短句。,而由于英语组句时注重“形合”，总是借助词形变化、虚词（如连接词、介词）、非谓语动词（不定式、分词）、从句等来表示各种语法关系，在汉译英时，一要注意把汉语句子内含的逻辑关系（特别是因果关系、条件关系、转折关系等）用英语的连接词表达出来；二要善于把汉语的众多动词分清顺序或分清主次编排，找出主要动词作为译文的主干，然后按英语习惯添加其他成分，在许多情况下需要把一些表目的、原因、伴随等的词或短句译为非谓语动词、从句或名词、介词等，以保证译文的逻辑性和外形的完整。,Exerc
