2、nship.WehavesixmembersoftheUnitedStatesCongress;theSecretaryofState;SecretaryofCommerce;theSecretaryofAgriculture;theChairmanofourCouncilofEconomicAdvisors;SenatorSasser,ourAmbassador;theNationalSecurityAdvisorandmyChiefofStaff,amongothers.IsaythattoillustratetheimportancethattheUnitedStatesplaceson
3、ourrelationshipwithChina.Iwouldliketobeginbycongratulatingallofyou,thestudents,thefaculty,theadministrators,oncelebratingthecentennialyearofyouruniversity.Gongxi,Beida.AsImsureallofyouknow,thiscampuswasoncehometoYenchingUniversitywhichwasfoundedbyAmericanmissionaries.Manyofitswonderfulbuildingswered
4、esignedbyanAmericanarchitect.ThousandsofAmericansstudentsandprofessorshavecomeheretostudyandteach.Wefeelaspecialkinshipwithyou.Iam,however,gratefulthatthisdayisdifferentinoneimportantrespectfromanotherimportantoccasion79yearsago.InJuneof1919,thefirstpresidentofYenchingUniversity,JohnLeightonStuart,w
5、assettodelivertheveryfirstcommencementaddressontheseverygrounds.Attheappointedhour,heappeared,butnostudentsappeared.TheywerealloutleadingtheMay4thMovementforChinaspoliticalandculturalrenewal.WhenIreadthis,IhopedthatwhenIwalkedintotheauditoriumtoday,someonewouldbesittinghere.AndIthankyouforbeinghere,
6、verymuch.Overthelast100years,thisuniversityhasgrowntomorethan20,000students.YourgraduatesarespreadthroughoutChinaandaroundtheworld.YouhavebuiltthelargestuniversitylibraryinallofAsia.Lastyear,20percentofyourgraduateswentabroadtostudy,includinghalfofyourmathandsciencemajors.Andinthisanniversaryyear,mo
7、rethanamillionpeopleinChina,Asia,andbeyondhaveloggedontoyourwebsite.Atthedawnofanewcentury,thisuniversityisleadingChinaintothefuture.Icomeheretodaytotalktoyou,thenextgenerationofChinasleaders,aboutthecriticalimportancetoyourfutureofbuildingastrongpartnershipbetweenChinaandtheUnitedStates.TheAmerican
8、peopledeeplyadmireChinaforitsthousandsofyearsofcontributionstocultureandreligion,tophilosophyandthearts,toscienceandtechnology.WerememberwellourstrongpartnershipinWorldWarII.NowweseeChinaatamomentinhistorywhenyourgloriouspastismatchedbyyourpresentsweepingtransformationandtheevengreaterpromiseofyourf
9、uture.Justthreedecadesago,Chinawasvirtuallyshutofffromtheworld.Now,Chinaisamemberofmorethan1,000internationalorganizations-enterprisesthataffecteverythingfromairtraveltoagriculturaldevelopment.Youhaveopenedyournationtotradeandinvestmentonalargescale.Today,40,000youngChinesestudyintheUnitedStates,wit
10、hhundredsofthousandsmorelearninginAsia,Africa,Europe,andLatinAmerica.Yoursocialandeconomictransformationhasbeenevenmoreremarkable,movingfromaclosedcommandeconomicsystemtoadriving,increasinglymarket-basedanddriveneconomy,generatingtwodecadesofunprecedentedgrowth,givingpeoplegreaterfreedomtotravelwith
11、inandoutsideChina,tovoteinvillageelections,toownahome,chooseajob,attendabetterschool.Asaresultyouhaveliftedliterallyhundredsofmillionsofpeoplefrompoverty.Percapitaincomehasmorethandoubledinthelastdecade.MostChinesepeopleareleadinglivestheycouldnothaveimaginedjust20yearsago.Ofcourse,thesechangeshavea
12、lsobroughtdisruptionsinsettledpatternsoflifeandwork,andhaveimposedenormousstrainsonyourenvironment.OnceeveryurbanChinesewasguaranteedemploymentinastateenterprise.Nowyoumustcompeteinajobmarket.OnceaChineseworkerhadonlytomeetthedemandsofacentralplannerinBeijing.Nowtheglobaleconomymeansallmustmatchtheq
13、ualityandcreativityoftherestoftheworld.Forthosewholacktherighttrainingandskillsandsupport,thisnewworldcanbedaunting.Intheshort-term,good,hardworkingpeople-some,atleastwillfindthemselvesunemployed.And,asallofyoucansee,therehavebeenenormousenvironmentalandeconomicandhealthcarecoststothedevelopmentpatt
14、ernandtheenergyusepatternofthelast20years-fromairpollutiontodeforestationtoacidrainandwatershortage.Inthefaceofthesechallengesnewsystemsoftrainingandsocialsecuritywillhavetobedevised,andnewenvironmentalpoliciesandtechnologieswillhavetobeintroducedwiththegoalofgrowingyoureconomywhileimprovingtheenvir
15、onment.EverythingIknowabouttheintelligence,theingenuity,theenterpriseoftheChinesepeopleandeverythingIhaveheardtheselastfewdaysinmydiscussionswithPresidentJiang,PrimeMinisterZhuandothersgivemeconfidencethatyouwillsucceed.AsyoubuildanewChina,Americawantstobuildanewrelationshipwithyou.WewantChinatobesu
16、ccessful,secureandopen,workingwithusforamorepeacefulandprosperousworld.IknowtherearethoseinChinaandtheUnitedStateswhoquestionwhethercloserrelationsbetweenourcountriesisagoodthing.Buteverythingallofusknowaboutthewaytheworldischangingandthechallengesyourgenerationwillfacetellusthatourtwonationswillbefarbetteroffworkingtogetherthanapart.Thelateingcounseledustoseektruthfromfacts.Atthedawnofthenewcentury,thefactsareclear.Thedistancebetweenourtwonations,indeed,betweenanynations,isshrink
