9、, a friend and I saw a description of the first “PC” or personal computer in a magazine. As we read about it, we got very excited. We didnt know exactly how the PC would be used, but we knew that it would be important. We were right. The PC revolution has changed the way millions and millions of peo

10、ple around the world live and work.,Now we are all beginning another great journey. This journey is based on new ways of communicating and exchanging information. Some people call it the “information highway.” This new communications revolution will take place over many years and will require us to

11、solve problems which are not yet seen. Many important decisions will have to be made, and our choices will affect the whole world.,Decisions about planning the information highway should be made by all kinds of people. Not just technical people and computer experts, but everyday citizens and compute

12、r users themselves must also be involved. That way, the information highway will fulfill its great potential.,I hope my book will serve as something like a map or a travel guide for the trip that we are all about to take together on the information highway. That is why Ive chosen to call it The Road

13、 Ahead. My goal in writing this book is to encourage the exchange of creative ideas about technology. As we read excitedly about the first truly personal computer, Paul and I didnt know exactly how it would be used, but we were sure it would change us and the world of computing. We were right. The personal-computer revolution happened

16、and it has affected millions of lives. It has led us to places we had barely imagined.,Language Points,2 We are all beginning another great journey. We arent sure where this one will lead us either, but again I am certain this revolution will touch even more lives and take us all farther. The major changes coming will be in the way people communicate with each other. The benefits and problems arising from this upcoming communications revolution will be much greater than those brought about by the PC revolution.,
