His father was a local lawyer.,When Twain was four, his mother died, the family moved to Hannibal, Missouri,a port town on the Mississi

6、ppi River,At that time, Missouri was a slave state, and young Twain became familiar with the institution of slavery, a theme he would later explore in his writing.,when Twain was 11, his father died of pneumonia.,The next year, he became a printers apprentice. In 1851, he began working as a typesett

7、er and contributor of articles and humorous sketches for the Hannibal Journal,When he was 18, he left Hannibal and worked as a printer in New York City.,He joined the union and educated himself in public libraries in the evenings, finding wider sources of information than he would have at a conventi

8、onal (一般的) school.,At 22, Twain returned to Missouri.,He worked as a river pilot,until the American Civil War broke out in 1861 and traffic along the Mississippi was curtailed(缩减).,Travels,Twain and his brother traveled for more than two weeks on a stagecoach across the Great Plains and the Rocky Mo

11、Then ,he visited her and lived in her home for two weeks. During these two weeks, they talked with each other a lot, and she was attracted by his sense of humor. However Olivia refused when Mark Twain proposed to her because of his low social position, as well as smoking and drinking. Nothing could

12、stop his steps on pursuing Olivia ,so he continued to write to her. Not until receiving 184 letters from him, did she finally agree to marry him,The couples marriage lasted 34 years, until Olivias death in 1904,They got married in February 1870 .,They had four children, while the only son was died a

13、t 19 months.,Twain made a substantial amount of money through his writing,but he lost a great deal through investments and publishing house,so he plunged into debt. Twain s writing and lectures, combined with the help of the friend ,enabled him to recover financially. He passed through a period of d

14、eep depression, which began in 1896 when his daughter Susy died. Olivias death in 1904 and Jeans on December 24, 1909, deepened his gloom.
