A number of studies and researches on techniques or methods have been done on

Reading and studying these researches, this paper mainly discusses the definition and language style of news and concludes some of the major techniques of English-Chinese news translation.Key words definition of news; language style; translating; techniques; Eng

3、lish news1.0 IntroductionSince news is one of the most significant ways for people to know about the world, more emphasis should be placed on the translation of news. However, due to the differences between the two languagesEnglish and Chinese, its just a little difficult to translate accurately fro

4、m the original language to the target language. The same problem unavoidably occurs in news translation. Thus, due attention should be paid to this point while translating English news into Chinese.2.0 Definition and language style of NewsTo keep ourselves updated and connected with the nation and t

5、he world, we all read news. So, what is news?According to Webster Dictionary, news is defined as following:New information or a report about something that has happened recently.And according to Oxford Dictionary (7th edition), news is reports of recent events that appear in newspaper or on televisi

6、on or radio. These two definitions have, actually, told us two of the characteristics of news. “Recently” means the information or events must happen not long before. Generally speaking, it happens within 24 hours. And news contents some “information” or “events”, which means that “5W+H” (who, what,

7、 when, when, why+how) is included in the news. Besides, news is also characterized by authenticity, objectivity, and extensiveness. Authenticity means the contents of news must be on the ground of truth, and objectivity means that while writing, editing, or translating piece of news, the author, edi

8、tor, or translator should not add their own opinions or personal emotion into it. And extensiveness means that news is widely spread in the neighborhood, the nation, or even the world.David Crystal and Derek Davy, two famous British stylisticians, gives their definition of style in the book Investig

9、ating English Style: codes of language that a crowd adopt in a certain span of time. Another British stylistician, Randolph Quirk, classifies language style into five categories: very formal, formal, neural, informal, and very informal. As for news, the language style is neural. Thats to say, to mee

10、t the requirement of extensiveness, the contents of the news must be readable and understandable to most of the readers, in terms of the complexity of words and writing style. 3.0 Techniques of English-Chinese News TranslationThe characteristics of news and the features of language style mentioned a

11、bove have set limitations or requirements for news translation. Generally, while translating, translator should pay more attention to several points of the translated text: its conciseness, accuracy, objectivity, and diction.Firstly please look at the following figure.Figure I.Chinese newsEnglish ne

Therefore, while translating the news, tran

13、slators should try to use more simple expressions and short sentences. When necessary, they can even put the original two or three paragraphs into one, since some paragraphs may content only one or two sentences. The reason why I put this principle in the first place is that I think before translati

14、ng, translators should first bear this in mind.Secondly, accuracy is one the most important. Readers read news to get information. What if the information is wrong or even unreal? Readers themselves cannot test or verify the authenticity of the news. To this extent, translator, as a secondary inform

15、ation disseminator, is responsible to its authenticity. That means they should translate the news accurately.Thirdly, the objectivity of news is another essential point. Due to different historical, political, and cultural backgrounds, different countries may adopt different attitudes towards a same

16、 issue, which may results in bias in media. However, one of the purposes of news is to report objectively and impartially. Thus, when translators meet the dilemma that the report is prejudiced, he or she can make proper amount of deletion. That doesnt go against the principle of accuracy.Last but not least, based on various kinds of news, the diction style can be changed accordingly. For example, it would be better if diction of entertainment news can be vivid and humorous. In contrast, w
