2、 career for my beloved motherland, the UK, when it comes to my last few years of life.” Vivien Leigh, the heroine of the movie Gone With the Wind, also expressed publicly, “When referring to my home country Great Britain, therere only two words Id most like to describe: pretty and beautiful! Im star

3、ting to live there peacefully years later.”Its true that the beauty of Britain is as hard to say as it is easy to enjoy. We have here no vast mountains or plains, but we have excellent variety. A great deal of everything is packed into this little space. People always forget the fact that this is a

4、smallish island, with the sea always round the corner. Nature, we feel, has carefully adjusted things mountains, plains, rivers, lakes to the size of the island itself. A mountain 12,000 feet high would be a terrible monster here, as wrong as a plain 400 miles long, a river as broad as the Mississip

5、pi.Though the geographical features of this island are comparatively small, that does not mean that our mountains are not mountains, our plains not plains. As a report pointed out in The Thames recently, that some climbers invited a Swiss guide into the Lake District, and on the first morning, watch

6、ing the misty, rough peaks before him, the guide told the group that they were spending the night there. He did not know those peaks were only an hour or twos journey away and that before dusk they would probably have conquered two or three of them. He had not realized the scale of the country. What

7、 he did know was that he was certainly looking at mountains, and he was right. For these peaks, though not so high in altitude, they have all the air of great mountains as well.For variety of landscape, these sights on this island cannot be matched anywhere else. A days walk among them will give you

8、 almost everything fit to be seen on this earth. Within a few hours, you have enjoyed the green valleys, with their rivers, fine old bridges, pleasant villages, hanging woods, smooth fields; and then the moorland slopes, with their rushing streams, stone walls, salty winds, crying curlews and white

9、farmhouses. Yet less than an hour in a fast motor will bring you to the middle of some busy towns, and soon you are leaving and forgetting these towns just as easily as youre entering some other modern cities like London or Manchester next minute.Another characteristic of Britains landscape is its e

10、xcellent moderation. With us the 2cities pretend that they are not really there until we are well inside them. They almost hide themselves into the countryside. It has been born of a balance between nature and man. This harmony explains in part the charm of Britain, where towns fit closely into the

11、landscape, and roads go winding the easiest way as naturally as rivers; and it is impossible to say where cultivation ends and wild life begins.
