Peering out his doo r into the night, he recognized th e face of a trusted neighbor. “Th eres a party of escaped slaves h iding in the woods in Kentucky, t wenty miles from the river,“ the man whispered urgently. Parker didnt hes
2、itate. “Ill go,“ he said, p ushing a pair of pistols into his p ockets. 7.Born a slave two decades before, inthe 1820s, Parker had been tak en from his mother at age eight and forced to walk in chains fromVirginia to Alabama, where he w as sold on the slave market. Crossing the Ohio River on that chil ly night, Parker found ten fugitives frozen with fear. “Get your bundlesand follow me, “ he told them, lea ding the eight men and two wome n toward the river. They had almo st reached shore when a watchma n spotted them and raced
