4、stractFrom a perspective of bildungsroman and through an exploration into the main character Pauls growth process from dependence to independence, from self-absence to a gradual consciousness of self, this thesis tries to show the complexity, intricacy, and uniqueness of the relationship between Pau
5、ls growth and the environment of society, family, and parents; the relationship between his growth and gender issues; and the relationship between his growth and self. The result this thesis finds is that in the process of growth Paul, on the one hand, he has to keep an independent self. But on the
6、other hand, he needs to adjust the distorted and alienated relationship with the social force under the pressure of capitalist industrial civilization so that he could maintain a harmonious unity with various social relations and may find a true self of his own.Firstly, it gives an introduction abou
7、t this thesis. Secondly, this thesis gives a brief introduction about bildungsroman and defines Son and Lovers as a bildungsroman. It also discusses Pauls growth environment. And then it will focus on the analysis of the protagonist Pauls growth process. From a perspective of bildungsroman and throu
8、gh an exploration into Pauls growth process, it shows the relationship between man and society, between the sexes, and between man and himself. In the end, it makes a conclusion, it reveals that only when one truly becomes his own self is it possible for him to be harmoniously unified with others, s
9、ociety, and finally himself.Pauls growth process towards independence and his search for a true self reveal that when one possesses a clear self consciousness and identifies his self value, it is possible for him to search for a true self; only when one truly becomes his own self is it possible for
10、him to be harmoniously unified with others and the society.- -3Key words: Son and Lovers, bildungsroman, realization, self, independence内容摘要作者从成长小说中的成长主题这一角度切入小说，通过对小说主人公保罗从依赖到独立、从自我缺失到自我认识再到自我实现过程进行探索，展现主人公在成长过程中与社会、家庭、父母之间，与两性之间以及自身之间关系的复杂性与独特性：在成长过程中既要保持自我的独立性，又要不断调整在资本主义工业文明压一下的各种扭曲和异化的关系，以期达到各种
11、关系的和谐统一，并最终实现真正的自我。第一部分对文章作了简单阐述。第二部分对成长小说中的成长主题作简单介绍，并从成长主题这个角度介绍儿子与情人 ，同时对主人公的成长环境进行分析。从第三部分到第五部分主要讲述主人公的成长历程，从成长小说的角度来发掘、探索人与社会的关系、两性之间的关系及人与人之间的关系在成长过程对保罗的影响。最后一部分对本文作总结，这篇论文反映出人只有拥有真正的自我才能以期实现与他人、与社会以及与自我的和谐、统一。主人公走向独立、勇于追求真正自我的成长经历表明只有抛弃依附性，确认自我独立意识，并认识到自我意识的宝贵性，才能走向新生活，拥有真正的自我，而人只有拥有真正的自我才能以期

This thesis will investigate the main character Pauls growth process from his dependence to independence,
13、from self-absence to a gradual consciousness of self. At the same time, it will also discuss the relationship between Pauls growth and the environment of the society, his family and parents; the relationship between his growth and gender issues; the inner world of himself. Under the pressure of capi
14、talist civilization, he needs to adjust the distorted and alienated relationship with social force, so that he could construct a harmonious unity with various social relations and may find a true self of his own.D. H. Lawrence is mostly distinguished by his sensational, controversial and anti-social
15、 masterpieces such as The Rainbow, Lady Chatterleys Lover, Son and Lovers, etc. Many critics have studied the novel son and lovers by centering upon the theme of it: theme of gender issues, theme of psychology of the characters. Criticisms on theme of gender issues focus upon how to balance men and
16、womens need of sex and spirit. While investigating into the theme of psychology in the characters, most critics often apply the theory of psychoanalysis in the study of the novel. They use Freuds psychosexual theory of the Oedipus to explain the relationship between Paul and his mother. They regard the Oedipus Complex as the main theme of the novel. The theme of gender issues illuminates the relationship of repulsion and attraction between the sexes. The criti
