1、 Common Sense Advisory 评选“世界百强语言供应商”专注翻译 恪守精准 1 科技翻译：科技翻译：Bottom line Bottom line 该译为“底线”吗？该译为“底线”吗？ 我们经常可以在媒体上看到“底线”一词。如某记者推测某市“接收和医治 SARS 病人的底线是 6000 人。”“坚持一个中国原则是我们的底线。”等等。如今， 汉语中出现了许多新词，其中不少是外来语，那么“底线”一词是汉语先有的呢， 还是从英语的“bottom line”翻译来的呢？两者有何关系？是否可以互译呢？ “bottom line”原义指财务帐目表上最下面的一行或那一行上写的表示盈亏的数 目
2、。英文定英文定义义是“the final line on a companys accounting statement that shows profit or loss that the company makes at the end of a given period of time after everything has been calculated.”。 1. The bottom line for 2001 was pre-tax profit of 5 million.（2001 年 公司财务状况是税前利润 500 万英镑。） 2. Sales last month fai
3、led to add to the companys bottom line.（上月经 销额没能使公司盈利增加。） 3. How will the rise in interest rates affect our bottom line?（利率的 提高对我们的利润有何影响？） 对公司来说，盈亏是大事，所以“bottom line”的第二个定第二个定义义是“the deciding or crucial factor; the essential point in a discussion or an argument; the most important thing that one mu
4、st consider or accept; the most important factor that must be accepted, however reluctantly or even you may not like it”。这里强调两点：一是重要，关键，二是无法回避，必须考虑或接受。 4. The bottom line is that we have to increase our sales or take a cut in pay.（关键问题是我们必须增加销售额，否则就得减工资。） 5. If you dont make a profit, you go out of

B: I can go down to 450.（甲：这辆车底价是多少？乙：最低 450 英镑。） 汉语中的“底线”有哪些意思呢？汉语里“底线”原先只有两个意思。一是表示 某些球类运动场地两端相对与“边线”（side line）的“底线”。 但在英语里，此处不能用“bottom line”。篮球和足球场地的底线是“back line” 或“end line”；足球球门柱之间部分是“goal line”；羽毛球和网球场地的底 线是“base line”。所以，描述运动场地时，不可以用“bottom line”。 二是指“暗藏在对方内部刺探情况或进行其他活动的人”，也就是常
7、说的“内线” 或 “卧底” 。 显然这个意思与 “bottom line” 毫无关系， 因此， 千万不能用 “bottom line”表示。 这里有三个例句： 1. We will do all we can to relieve the symptoms of the patients and reduce fatality: that is our bottom line. 2. The citys bottom line in treating SARS patients is 6000. 3. That there is but only one China in the world
8、is our bottom line. 我们发现“底线”的意思在三个例句中分别为“基本标准或准则”，“极限能力或条件”，“基本立场和原则”。这些意思与 bottom line 十分接近，但在现 代汉语词典中却查不到这些意思，因此很可能是从 bottom line 里转化来的。 那么，“bottom line”是否都能翻译成“底线”呢？ 由于汉语的“底线”没有“财务”，“利润”，“盈利”等意思，所以第二段中 前三句的“bottom line“不可翻译为“底线”。 汉语中的“底线”已经能表示“bottom line”的“关键，重要”等意思，所以第 二段中后两句可翻译为“底线”，但译成“关键问题”和“必须面对的现实”似 乎更清楚自然。至于谈到价格，汉语里有“底价”一词，用在这里很合适，因此 不必翻译为“底线”了。
