、n Kyoto, Japan from October 2-4, 2003. This follows the two previous symposia which were held in Hiroshima in 1999 and La Jolla, California in 2001. The role of Radiation Therapy has come to the front because of the increasing incidents of cancer among elderly people and growing desire for higher QO
、L. The most important task to achieve those goals is to selectively induce damage to cancer cells while minimizing the damage to normal structures. The recent progress in molecular biology in cancer research has led to the development of new concept of anti-cancer agents and molecular- targeted drug
、s. In addition to cytotoxic or cytostatic effects on cancer cells, they are being investigated as molecular-based radiosensitizers. On the other hand, the progress in Information Technology and Medical Physics has led to the development of Stereotactic Radiosurgery and Intensity Modulated Radiation
、Therapy (IMRT), as a physical-engineering approach to spatially focus radiation on tumors. In this symposium, American and Japanese leading researchers will convene in order to present and discuss the newest achievements with respect to biological and physical targeting treatment of cancers, and to
、exchange ideas on how to build up a new therapeutic strategy through integration of biological and physical targeting approaches. Kyoto, the symposium venue had been the capital of Japan for more than 1000 years from 794 A.D. to 1868, and is one of the most historic and beautiful cities in the world
、. We hope all participants will enjoy the symposium as well as the scenic beauty of Kyoto. We look forward with pleasure to welcoming your participation in the Symposium.
