3、eof youinkindergarten,orstartingmiddleorhighschool,itsyourfirstdayina newschool,soitsunderstandableifyourealittlenervous.Iimaginethere aresomeseniorsouttherewhoarefeelingprettygoodrightnow- (applause)- withjustonemoreyeartogo.Andnomatterwhatgradeyourein,someofy ouareprobablywishingitwerestillsummera
4、ndyoucouldvestayedinbe djustalittlebitlongerthismorning.Iknowthatfeeling.WhenIwasyoung,myfamilylivedoverseas.Ilivedin Indonesiaforafewyears.Andmymother,shedidnthavethemoneytosen dmewherealltheAmericankidswenttoschool,butshethoughtitwasimp ortantformetokeepupwithanAmericaneducation.Soshedecidedtotea
5、chmeextralessonsherself,MondaythroughFriday.Butbecauseshehadt ogotowork,theonlytimeshecoulddoitwasat4:30inthemorning.Now,asyoumightimagine,Iwasnttoohappyaboutgettingupthatearly. Andalotoftimes,Idfallasleeprightthereatthekitchentable.Butwhenev erIdcomplain,mymotherwouldjustgivemeoneofthoselooksandshe
6、d say,“Thisisnopicnicformeeither,buster.“(Laughter.)SoIknowthatsomeofyouarestilladjustingtobeingbackatschool.ButI mheretodaybecauseIhavesomethingimportanttodiscusswithyou.Im herebecauseIwanttotalkwithyouaboutyoureducationandwhatsexpec tedofallofyouinthisnewschoolyear.Now,Ivegivenalotofspeechesaboute
7、ducation.AndIvetalkedaboutre sponsibilityalot.Ivetalkedaboutteachersresponsibilityforinspiringstudentsandpushi ngyoutolearn.Ivetalkedaboutyourparentsresponsibilityformakingsureyoustayont rack,andyougetyourhomeworkdone,anddontspendeverywakinghou rinfrontoftheTVorwiththeXbox.Ivetalkedalotaboutyourgove
8、rnmentsresponsibilityforsettinghighsta ndards,andsupportingteachersandprincipals,andturningaroundschoo lsthatarentworking,wherestudentsarentgettingtheopportunitiesthatt heydeserve.Butattheendoftheday,wecanhavethemostdedicatedteachers,themost supportiveparents,thebestschoolsintheworld- andnoneofitwil
9、lmakeadifference,noneofitwillmatterunlessallofyouf ulfillyourresponsibilities,unlessyoushowuptothoseschools,unlessyoupayattentiontothoseteachers,unlessyoulistentoyourparentsandgran dparentsandotheradultsandputinthehardworkittakestosucceed.That swhatIwanttofocusontoday:theresponsibilityeachofyouhasfo
10、ryoure ducation.Iwanttostartwiththeresponsibilityyouhavetoyourself.Everysingleon eofyouhassomethingthatyouregoodat.Everysingleoneofyouhassom ethingtooffer.Andyouhavearesponsibilitytoyourselftodiscoverwhatt hatis.Thatstheopportunityaneducationcanprovide.Maybeyoucouldbeagreatwriter- maybeevengoodenoug
11、htowriteabookorarticlesinanewspaper- butyoumightnotknowituntilyouwritethatEnglishpaper- thatEnglishclasspaperthatsassignedtoyou.Maybeyoucouldbeaninno vatororaninventor- maybeevengoodenoughtocomeupwiththenextiPhoneorthenewmedi cineorvaccine- butyoumightnotknowituntilyoudoyourprojectforyourscienceclas

MaybeyoucouldbeamayororasenatororaSupremeCourtjustice- butyoumightnotknowthatuntilyoujoinstudentgovernmentorthedebat eteam.Andnomatterwhatyouwanttodowithyourlife,Iguaranteethatyoullnee daneducationtodoit.Youwanttobeadoctor,orateacher,orapoliceoffic er?Youwanttobeanurseoranarchitect,alawyeroramemb
13、erofourmilita ry?Youregoingtoneedagoodeducationforeverysingleoneofthosecar eers.Youcannotdropoutofschoolandjustdropintoagoodjob.Youvego ttotrainforitandworkforitandlearnforit.Andthisisntjustimportantforyourownlifeandyourownfuture.Whatyo umakeofyoureducationwilldecidenothinglessthanthefutureofthiscou
14、ntry.ThefutureofAmericadependsonyou.Whatyourelearninginscho oltodaywilldeterminewhetherweasanationcanmeetourgreatestchalle ngesinthefuture.Youllneedtheknowledgeandproblem- solvingskillsyoulearninscienceandmathtocurediseaseslikecanceran dAIDS,andtodevelopnewenergytechnologiesandprotectourenviron ment
15、.Youllneedtheinsightsandcritical- thinkingskillsyougaininhistoryandsocialstudiestofightpovertyandho melessness,crimeanddiscrimination,andmakeournationmorefairand morefree.Youllneedthecreativityandingenuityyoudevelopinallyour classestobuildnewcompaniesthatwillcreatenewjobsandboostoureco nomy.Weneedev
16、erysingleoneofyoutodevelopyourtalentsandyourskillsand yourintellectsoyoucanhelpusoldfolkssolveourmostdifficultproblem s.Ifyoudontdothat-ifyouquitonschool- yourenotjustquittingonyourself,yourequittingonyourcountry.Now,Iknowitsnotalwayseasytodowellinschool.Iknowalotofyouhav echallengesinyourlivesrightnowthatcanmakeithardtofocusonyoursc hoolwork.Igetit.Iknowwhatitslike.MyfatherleftmyfamilywhenIwastwoyearso ld,andIwasraisedbyasinglemomwhohadtowork
