4、mes of A Mid-Summer Nights DreamIntroductionThe main plot of A Midsummer Nights Dream is very complex because it involves two sets of couples (Hermia and Lysander, and Helena and Demetrius) whose romantic cross-purposes are complicated still further by their entrance into the plays fairyland woods w
5、here the King and Queen of the Fairies (Oberon and Titania) preside and the folk character of Puck plies his trade. Shakespeare wrote this play as a light entertainment to accompany a marriage celebration. The play is a pure comedy full of the element of fairy tale. There is no moral purpose. It is
6、one of Shakespeares funniest and most popular comedies. The tone of the play is so lighthearted that the audience never doubts that things will end happily, and it is, therefore, free to enjoy the comedy without being caught up in the tension of an uncertain outcome.A Midsummer Nights Dream contains
7、 some wonderfully lyrical expressions of lighter Shakespearean themes, most notably those of love, dreams, and the stuff of both. This thesis focuses on the themes. They are loves difficulty and dream.I. Loves Difficulty A. For Hermia and LysanderHermia, daughter of Egeus, is in love with Lysander.
8、Her father asks her to marry to Demetrius who loves Helena at first. But she refuses even though she will get a full penalty for her decision. Lysander, a young Athens man, is in love with Hermia. But he cannot marry openly because of the disapproval of Hermias father. Lysanders relationship with He
9、rmia involves the theme of loves difficulty mainly. First, there is a cruel law that the daughter cannot disobey her fathers will to marry another. Otherwise, she will be punished to death. Since it is a law, everybody should obey this rule. She cannot change the law.Secondly, her father, Egues, ins
10、ists on that Hermia can marry only to Demetrius, not Lysander. Egues does not allow her to marry Lysander. If she disobeys his will, she should face death. It is the difficulty from her father. Egues does not like Lysander to be the husband of his daughter. Thirdly, Demetrius loves her very much.
