7、ontents describing the complicated love affairs between two homely or rather ugly but profound personalities. During the Victorian times the whole society was experiencing a quick social and economic reform as well as an alteration in moral spectrum. The traditional values were questioned especially

8、 the orthodox doctrines of Christianity, and new ones were to be formulated.The novel has been read with unceasing excitement by successive generations of readers to this day. The author employed anti-gothic means and symbolism in the production of the novel and combined them in a harmonious way, th

9、us blowing a fresh breeze to the literature of the literature in her unique woman writers touches. In the Christianity-dominated society,the author rejected divinity and let out a cry for humanity, craving for independence, liberty and equality bravely. It is the social meaning of the novel that con

10、solidated its position in the world classics.Undoubtedly, it is the authors unique artistic charm in the creation of the novel and social significance involved that immortalize this masterpiece. In this paper I will tentatively explicate these two topics listed above especially the latter, based on
