2、tionhasneverseen;bypeoplewhowaitedthreehoursandfourhours,manyfortheveryfirsttimeintheirlives,becausetheybelievedthatthistimemustbedifferent;thattheirvoicecouldbethatdifference.itstheanswerspokenbyyoungandold,richandpoor,democratandrepublican,black,white,latino,asian,nativeamerican,gay,straight,disab
3、ledandnotdisabled-americanswhosentamessagetotheworldthatwehaveneverbeenacollectionofredstatesandbluestates:weare,andalwayswillbe,theunitedstatesofamerica.itstheanswerthatledthosewhohavebeentoldforsolongbysomanytobecynical,andfearful,anddoubtfulofwhatwecanachievetoputtheirhandsonthearcofhistoryandben
4、ditoncemoretowardthehopeofabetterday.ijustreceivedaverygraciouscallfromsenatormccain.hefoughtlongandhardinthiscampaign,andhesfoughtevenlongerandharderforthecountryheloves.hehasenduredsacrificesforamericathatmostofuscannotbegintoimagine,andwearebetterofffortheservicerenderedbythisbraveandselflesslead
5、er.icongratulatehimandgovernorpalinforalltheyhaveachieved,andilookforwardtoworkingwiththe第 2 页mtorenewthisnationspromiseinthemonthsahead.iwanttothankmypartnerinthisjourney,amanwhocampaignedfromhisheartandspokeforthemenandwomenhegrewupwithonthestreetsofscrantonandrodewithonthattrainhometodelaware,the
6、vicepresident-electoftheunitedstates,joebiden.iwouldnotbestandingheretonightwithouttheunyieldingsupportofmybesttomycampaignmanagerdavidplouffe,mychiefstrategistdavidaxelrod,andthebestcampaignteameverassembledinthehistoryofpolitics-youmadethishappen,andiamforevergratefulforwhatyouvesacrificedtogetitd
7、one.butaboveall,iwillneverforgetwhothisvictorytrulybelongsto-itbelongstoyou.iwasneverthelikeliestcandidateforthisoffice.wedidntstartwithmuchmoneyormanyendorsements.ourcampaignwasnothatchedinthehallsofwashington-itbeganinthebackyardsofdesmoinesandthelivingroomsofconcordandthefrontporchesofcharleston.
8、itwasbuiltbyworkingmenandwomenwhodugintowhatlittlesavingstheyhadtogivefivedollarsandtendollarsandtwentydollarstothiscause.itgrewstrengthfromtheyoungpeoplewhorejectedthemythoftheirgenerationsapathy;wholefttheirhomesandtheirfamiliesforjobsthatofferedlittlepayandlesssleep;fromthenot-so-youngpeoplewhobr
9、avedthebittercoldandscorchingheattoknockonthedoorsofperfectstrangers;fromthemillionsofamericanswhovolunteered,andorganized,andprovedthatmorethantwocenturieslater,agove第 3 页rnmentofthepeople,bythepeopleandforthepeoplehasnotperishedfromthisearth.thisisyourvictory.iknowyoudidntdothisjusttowinanelection
10、andiknowyoudidntdoitforme.youdiditbecauseyouunderstandtheenormityofthetaskthatliesahead.forevenaswecelebratetonight,weknowthechallengesthattomorrowwillbringarethegreatestofourlifetime-twowars,aplainperil,theworstfinancialcrisisinacentury.evenaswestandheretonight,weknowtherearebraveamericanswakingupi
11、nthedesertsofiraqandthemountainsofafghanistantorisktheirlivesforus.therearemothersandfatherswhowilllieawakeaftertheirchildrenfallasleepandwonderhowtheyllmakethemortgage,orpaytheirdoctorsbills,orsaveenoughforcollege.thereisnewenergytoharnessandnewjobstobecreated;newschoolstobuildandthreatstomeetandal
12、liancestorepair.theroadaheadwillbelong.ourclimbwillbesteep.wemaynotgetthereinoneyearorevenoneterm,butamerica-ihaveneverbeenmorehopefulthaniamtonightthatwewillgetthere.ipromiseyou-weasapeoplewillgetthere.therewillbesetbacksandfalsestarts.therearemanywhowontagreewitheverydecisionorpolicyimakeaspreside
13、nt,andweknowthatgovernmentcantsolveeveryproblem.butiwillalwaysbehonestwithyouaboutthechallengesweface.iwilllistentoyou,especiallywhenwedisagree.andaboveall,iwillaskyoujoinintheworkofremakingthisnationtheonlywayitsbeendoneinamericafortwo-hundredandtwenty-oneyears-第 4 页blockbyblock,brickbybrick,callou

15、nsibilitywhereeachofusresolvestopitchinandworkharderandlookafternotonlyourselves,buteachother.letusrememberthatifthisfinancialcrisistaughtusanything,itsthatwecannothaveathrivingwallstreetwhilemainstreetsuffers-inthiscountry,weriseorfallasonenation;asonepeople.letusresistthetemptationtofallbackonthes
16、amepartisanshipandpettinessandimmaturitythathaspoisonedourpoliticsforsolong.letusrememberthatitwasamanfromthisstatewhofirstcarriedthebanneroftherepublicanpartytothewhitehouse-apartyfoundedonthevaluesofself-reliance,individualliberty,andnationalunity.thosearevaluesweallshare,andwhilethedemocraticpartyhaswonagreatvictorytonight,wedosowithameasureofhumilityanddeterminationtohealthedividesthathaveheldbackourprogress.aslincolnsaidtoanationfarmoredividedthanours,wearenotenemies,butfrien
