2、causativeagent,felinecoronavirus (FCoV),isimportanttothepractisingveterinarysurgeonfortwo reasons.First,theyhavetoknowwhetheracatwithFIPintheir surgeryposesahazardtoothercats.Secondly,theymayhaveto adviseownersofacatwithFIPwhetheritissafetoobtainanother catwhiletheaffectedcatisstillalive(bearinginmi
3、ndthatcats withdryornon-effusiveFIPcanliveformanyweeksormonths). Inexperimentalinfections,catswithFTPhavebeenshownnotto shedFCoVbythetimetheyareclinicallyill(Stoddartandothers 1988).However,inthiscommunication,theauthorsshowthat FCoVcanbedetectedinthefaecesandintestinalcontentsofcats whicharenatural
4、lyinfectedandsufferingfromFIP. Themostintractableobstacletothecompleteunderstandingof theepidemiologyofFlPhasbeenthenearimpossibilityofdetect- ingFCoVininfectedcats.Mostattemptstoisolatethevirusincell culturefromcasesofFIP,orfromcatssuspectedofcarryingthe virus,havefailedandonlyabout20isolateshavebe
5、enmade worldwidesincetheviruswasidentifiedover30yearsago.The recentdevelopmentofthereversetranscriptase-polymerasechain reaction(RT-PCR)todetectFCoVRNA,presumablyrepresenting wholevirus,infaecesandbodyfluidsofcats(Herreweghandoth- ers1995)maycircumventsomeoftheseproblemsandprovidean opportunitytoans
6、wersomeoftheoutstandingquestionsaboutthe transmissionofFCoV.Inthiscommunicationtheresultsofastudy todeterminewhethercatswithnaturallyoccurringFIPexcrete FCoV,byexaminingtheirgutcontentsforthepresenceofFCoV RNAbyRT-PCR,arepresented. Histopathologicalsamples,blood,asciticfluidandfaecesor intestinalcon
7、tentsfromcatssuspectedofhavingFIPwere obtainedonthedayofdeath.FIPwasconfirmedbyhistopathology aspreviouslydescribed(Addieandothers1995).Samplesofthe contentsofstomach,smallorlargeintestine,orfaeceswereavail- ablefrom23catswitheffusiveFIPandfivecatswithnon-effusive FIP.Thesampleswerestoredat-80Cuntil

16、inthebowel).Samples fromallpartsofthegutwereavailableforonlytwocats,cats24 and28,andviruswasdetectedonlyinthecaecumofcat24andin 522 on June 22, 2015 - Published by from TheVeterinaryRecord,November23,1996 allareasofthegastrointestinaltractofcat28.Overall,atdeath, fiveof12smallintestinalcontentswerenegative,comparedwith onlytwoof15largeintestinalcontents,faecalsamplesorrectal swabs.Theseproportionsarenotsignificantlydifferent(P=0.18, Fishersexacttest).
