But this was a building with a purpose: setting out to save a city drowning in its own waste, at a time when Londoners were quite literally seeing sewage coming up through their floorboards.Let

12、 me take you back to London before 1865.The Industrial Revolution had swept through Britain; the urban population had swollen; people were living in overcrowded, unhealthy places,which were filled with some infectious diseases.Life expectancy was less than 20 years for people in some towns and citie

13、s and many people had no access to clean water.Soon after the Crossness opened, London was as far apart as heaven and earth: an advanced system of 1, 100 miles of flowing water in underground tunnels was taking away 31 billion gallons of sewage per year and washing diseases off the streets of London

14、 town. This may seem common sense now,but at that time it was revolutionary thinking.But it was not just a brave old fashioned Victorian engineering that changed the life of people in London; it is also a clever design that may bring the problem in other places under control now. It means there can

15、be hope in a place like London many years ago. We can change the life of people who live in dangerously unhealthy conditions. Over 748 million people around the world still dont have access to clean water, while about 2.5 billion people do not have access to a toilet.
