1、Abstract1. An introduction to The Sorrows of Young Werther 1.1 Author introduction Johann Wolfgang von Goethe is a German writer and statesman. His body of work includes epic and lyric poetry written in a variety of metres and styles; prose and verse dramas; memoirs; an autobiography; literary and a

2、esthetic criticism; treatises on botany, anatomy, and colour; and four novels. In addition, numerous literary and scientific fragments, more than 10,000 letters, and nearly 3,000 drawings by him exist.A literary celebrity by the age of 25, Goethe was ennobled by the Duke of Saxe-Weimar, Karl August

3、in 1782 after taking up residence there in November 1775 following the success of his first novel, The Sorrows of Young Werther. He was an early participant in the Sturm und Drang literary movement. During his first ten years in Weimar, Goethe was a member of the Dukes privy council, sat on the war

4、and highway commissions, oversaw the reopening of silver mines in nearby Ilmenau, and implemented a series of administrative reforms at the University of Jena. The most important of Goethes works produced before he went to Weimar were Gtz von Berlichingen (1773), a tragedy that was the first work to

5、 bring him recognition, and the novel The Sorrows of Young Werther (German: Die Leiden des jungen Werthers) (1774), which gained him enormous fame as a writer in the Sturm und Drang period which marked the early phase of Romanticism. Goethe had a great effect on the nineteenth century. In many respe

6、cts, he was the originator of many ideas which later became widespread. He produced volumes of poetry, essays, criticism. Goethe embodied many of the contending strands in art over the next century: his work could be lushly emotional, and rigorously formal, brief and epigrammatic, and epic. He would

7、 argue that Classicism was the means of controlling art, and that Romanticism was a sickness, even as he penned poetry rich in memorable images, and rewrote the formal rules of German poetry.In 1832, Goethe died in Weimar of apparent heart failure.1.2 Introduction of WorkThe Sorrows of Young Werther

8、 is mostly made up of a series of letters that Werther, the title character, sends to his friend Wilhelm. In these letters, Werther shares his artistic endeavors and his philosophies on life. For example, Werther believes that feeling deep emotions is the best way to experience life. He also believe

9、s in being artsy and creating rather than being bogged down by an industrial job that he doesnt want. In fact, Werther moves to a small town in the countryside (Wahlheim) in order to get away from modern city values and to go back to what he believes is the simpler life in the country, where he make

10、s friends with some of the locals.One of the friends that Werther makes is a woman named Latt. He falls in love with her because she is caring and responsible; she takes care of her family and her sick mother, and Werther recognizes that she is faithful and devoted. Unfortunately for him, Latt is al

11、ready engaged to be married. Werther becomes more and more infatuated with Latt anyway; he thinks that they are meant to be together and have much more in common than she does with her husband-to-be, Albert. However, since Latt is in fact faithful and devoted, she refuses to leave Albert and Werther

12、 is so overcome with sadness and frustration that he leaves town for a job in the royal court at Weimar.However, things get worse for Werther at Weimar. He does not enjoy his job and though he makes friends with two aristocrats named Count C and Fraulein von B, the fraulein snubs him at a party and

13、embarrasses him, which is the last straw for Werther at Weimar. He moves on to spend a bit of time with a friend before going back to Wahlheim in order to see if he can get Latt to return his love one more time.In Wahlheim, he finds that one of his friends is dead and that Latt and Albert are still

14、together. Werthers insistence on trying to be more than friends with Latt ruins his relationship with Albert and eventually, Latt tells Werther that he must stop coming around her after he tries to kiss her instead of remaining platonic friends.Since Albert has won Lottes heart, Werther decides that

15、 he would rather die than remain miserable. Werther sends a letter to Latt asking for Alberts pistols, saying that hes going on a journey and will need them. Latt sadly sends them over, not knowing what Werther plans to do, and Werther uses the pistols to commit suicide. In the end, he dies after be

16、ing in a coma for twelve hours, watched by Latt and Albert, and he is buried without a church service underneath a tree.Werther, a young teenager, has freedom to live depending on his fathers legacy for a strong interest to natural scenery and simplicity of village life. Heavenly beauty, Castle Peak Glen, dawn twilight, village boy girl are the most beautiful scenery in the country life. These make him feel like living in paradise and forget
