It is situated in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers in southwest China. With an area of 82,400 square kilometers (31, 800 square miles), Chongqing shar
2、es borders with the provinces of Hubei, Hunan, Guizhou, Sichuan, and Shaanxi. Besides the Han who form the majority of its total population of 30.9 million, numerous ethnic groups reside in Chongqing, including Yi, Tibetan, Miao, Qiang, You and Tujia. Since its founding 3,000 years ago, Chongqing ha
3、s been called Jiangzhou, Yuzhou, and Gongzhou, before getting its present name nearly 800 years ago. Since the Qin Dynasty (221 BC-206 BC), many dynasties have set up administrative institutions that have endowed the city with brilliant cultures. Perched beside the Yangtze, the Golden River, Chongqi
4、ng symbolizes Yangtze River civilizations and is the cradle of Bayu culture. Today, Chongqing is a modern city, Chinas fourth municipality after Beijing, Shanghai, and Tianjin. Within its borders Chongqing encompasses a wealth of water reserves, mineral resources, dense forests, and abundant flora a

8、oping city by the “Report on Investment Environment of Chinese Cities” issued by the World Bank. Rich Resources There are rich mineral resources in Chongqing. 75 kinds of mineral have been explored; its advantageous minerals include coal, natural gas, manganese, Hg, aluminum, strontium etc. There ar
9、e many rivers within its territory, offering great water energy reserves. There are also large varieties of animals and plants, including 6,000 kinds of plants, 600 kinds of animals, and plantation coverage reaches 24.7%. Complete Transport System Chongqing port is a hub in upper reaches of Yangtze,
10、 there is a modern Cuntan International Container Dock, river-ocean combined transport is available. After completion of the Three-Gorges Dam, a 10,000-ton fleet can sail direct to Chongqing. Jiangbei International Airport has opened 120 domestic and international lines including direct cargo airfre
11、ight; entry visa upon arrival at the Airport is available. Railway network leads to all corners of China, container transport can reach Kowloon Hong Kong directly. There have been many bridges being built within the city; expressway system has also been very complete. Prosperous Industries Chongqing
12、s industries were developed quite early, now there are 2 pillar industries which are auto / motorcycle and chemicals / pharmaceuticals. Also high-tech industries such as electronic information, bioengineering, pollution control, optoelectronic integration and new materials are being developed rapidl
13、y, which become Chongqing new source of growth. There are 160,000 various industrial enterprises, which achieved an accreted industrial output of 105 billion Yuan in 2005. Agriculture with Great Potentials Chongqing has vast countryside; rural population reaches 24 million, offering cheap labor. Mul
14、tiple topography and appropriate climate provide favored conditions for agricultural development. There is a cultivated land area of 1.622 million hectares, being an important grain, orange and silkworm production base in China.
