1、TheBishopofBorglumandHisWarriorsbyHansChristianAndersen(1861)OURsceneislaidinNorthernJutland,intheso-called“wildmoor.”Wehearwhatiscalledthe“Wester-wow-wow”thepeculiarroaroftheNorthSeaasitbreaksagainstthewesterncoastofJutland.Itrollsandthunderswithasoundthatpenetratesformilesintotheland;andwearequite
2、neartheroaring.BeforeusrisesaGREatmoundofsandamountainwehavelongseen,andtowardswhichwearewendingourway,drivingslowlyalongthroughthedeepsand.OnthismountainofsandisaloftyoldbuildingtheconventofBorglum.Inoneofitswings(thelargerone)thereisstillachurch.Andatthisconventwenowarriveinthelateeveninghour;butt
3、heweatherisclearinthebrightJunenightaroundus,andtheeyecanrangefar,faroverfieldandmoortotheBayofAalborg,overheathandmeadow,andfaracrossthedeepbluesea.Nowwearethere,androllpastbetweenbarnsandotherfarmbuildings;andattheleftofthegateweturnasidetotheOldCastleFarm,wherethelimetreesstandinlinesalongthewall
4、s,and,shelteredfromthewindandweather,growsoluxuriantlythattheirtwigsandleavesalmostconcealthewindows.Wemountthewindingstaircaseofstone,andmarchthroughthelongpassagesundertheheavyroof-beams.Thewindmoansverystrangelyhere,bothwithinandwithout.Itishardlyknownhow,butthepeoplesayyes,peoplesayaGREatmanythi
5、ngswhentheyarefrightenedorwanttofrightenotherstheysaythattheolddeadchoir-menglidesilentlypastusintothechurch,wheremassissung.Theycanbeheardintherushingofthestorm,andtheirsingingbringsupstrangethoughtsinthehearersthoughtsoftheoldtimesintowhichwearecarriedback.Onthecoastashipisstranded;andthebishopswa

7、hekitchendeadgameandpoultry,hamsandsausages;andfatfishswiminthepondswithout.theBishopofBorglumisamightylord.HehasGREatpossessions,butstillhelongsformoreeverythingmustbowbeforethemightyOlafGlob.HisrichcousinatThylandisdead,andhiswidowistohavetherichinheritance.Buthowcomesitthatonerelationisalwayshard
8、ertowardsanotherthanevenstrangerswouldbe?ThewidowshusbandhadpossessedallThyland,withtheexceptionofthechurchproperty.Hersonwasnotathome.Inhisboyhoodhehadalreadystartedonajourney,forhisdesirewastoseeforeignlandsandstrangepeople.Foryearstherehadbeennonewsofhim.Perhapshehadbeenlonglaidinthegrave,andwoul

13、laythehandofthePopeuponthee,tosummontheebeforethetribunalthatshallcondemnthee!”thendidthewidowyokethelasttwooxenthatremainedtohertoawagon,andmounteduponthewagon,withheroldservant,andtravelledawayacrosstheheathoutoftheDanishland.Asastrangershecameintoaforeigncountry,whereastrangetonguewasspokenandwherenewcustomsprevailed.Fartherandfarthershejourneyed,towhereGREenhillsriseintomountains,andthevineclothestheirsides.Strangemerchantsdrivebyher,andtheylookanxiouslyafterthei
