The author fi

2、rst starts from the conflicts in Miss Emilys life, analyzing the reasons of the conflicts. Furthermore, from literal devices in this passage, William Faulkner explains to the readers how the conflicts are displayed. Based on the above, the author points out that Emilys character tragedy lies in the

3、obstinate traditional sense of hierarchy in the Old South of America. The conflicts, between the new system in the New South during its foundation and the old system in the Old South, as well as her greatly twisted character, lead to her tragic fate. 4、ragedy1.A brief introduction of A Rosefor Emily“A Rose for Emily” is a third-person narrative. The identity of the characters specific to the use of the words our and we is not given, though it is possible that these refer to the townspeople, who are narrating with a unified voice, representing Sout

5、hern white society. Emily, the heroine in the story was born in a noble family. Her father was fastidious about her marriage and drove away every man who paid court to her which made Emily be a fish out of water. After her fathers death, Emily got to know Barren, a foreman who came to the town to pa

6、ve the sidewalk. Emily fell in love with Barren. After Emily and Homer were seen driving through town several times, Emily visited a druggist. There, she asked to purchase arsenic. Citizens assumed Miss Emily meant to commit suicide since Homer had not yet proposed. Homer was last seen entering Emil

7、ys home and then never seen again. After Homers disappearance, Emily became more eccentric and inaccessible. Forty years later when Emily died, people had a chance to enter her mysterious house. In one bedroom downstairs, people found the dry and rotten body of Barren on the bed. On the pillow next

8、to that of the dead man, people found a long strand of iron-gray hair. 2.The causes of Emilys tragedy2.1 The domination of Emilys fatherIt is a five-part story The first section opens with a description of the Grierson house in Jefferson. The narrator mentions that over the years, Emily Griersons ho

9、me has fallen into disrepair and become an eyesore among eyesores. The first sentence of the story sets the tone of how the citizens of Jefferson felt about Emily: When Miss Emily Grierson died, our whole town went to the funeral: the men through a sort of respectful affection for a fallen monument,

10、 the women mostly out of curiosity to see the inside of her house, which no one save an old manservant a combined gardener and cook had seen in at least ten years. Then the narrator tells her strange story through a series of flashbacks. Emily is born to a proud, aristocratic family sometime during

11、the Civil War; her life in many ways reflects the disintegration of the Old South during the Reconstruction and the early twentieth century. Emilys father plays an important part in shaping her character. Dominated by her father and his rigid ideas of social status, she has been prevented from marry

12、ing during her lifetime. He chases away Emilys potential suitors because none of them are “good enough” for his daughter which keeps Emily staying away from the public and becoming eccentric. So that Emily is always staying indoors, lacking of friends in life, forming the unusual talk and attitude.

13、His death leaves Emily a tragic, penniless spinster. Because her father is the only one who understands her and aways accompanies her. She may even be mad she couldnt accept the truth that her father has died so she denies that her father is dead at first and she wont allow anyone to remove his corp

14、se until she breaks down after three days.One year after her fathers death, she falls in love with Barren. When she finds that her lover is not going to get married with her, she poisons him so that she can keep him with her forever. We can analyze this from Pathology and psychology. From Emilys beh

When she knows Barren may not marry her, she would rather kill him and keep his remains in order to keep him with he

16、r. We can also analyze this from Physiology. From Freud Sigmunds narration, there are three conceptions which are connected to the analysis needed to understand, that is, Id, Ego, and Super-ego. Miss Emily just tries her best to chase her happiness as other normal women do. From this angle, Miss Emily has the right to fall in love with Homer and to have their own family. What she has done is within the common practice. H
