1、Smiling Faces in ShigatseBack in January of 2012, I met Wu Wei in Lhasa with some other friends. He and his girlfriend Lily were running a small bar near the Jokhang Temple Square. Two years ago, I heard they closed the bar and moved to Shigatse in an attempt to open a lodge for travelers. When I ma

2、de my trip again to Tibet in November 2015, I decided to visit them.On the way to the lodge, Wu Wei told me his business has not started yet in fact, as the renovation project was delayed by some reasons last year.“I need to pick up the kids later”, said Wu Wei. I was surprised to hear that his chil

3、dren had already reached the kindergarten age. He then explained:“No, they are not my kids. They are kids from the orphanage.” From there on, I learned more about the stories in the orphanage as well as what Wu Wei and his friends have been doing all these years.The lodge is located in the old town

4、district of Shigatse, which is divided into a tea house in the front and the lodge itself in the back yard. In spite of the messy construction work in the yard, the whole property looks very suitable for serving as a lodge, with bright sunlight above head making its quite warm inside, even in cold w

5、inter time.Wu Wei used to work in a research institute in Beijing after graduating from the University of Electronic Science and Technology, a very rewarding and stable job to many. However, he sent his resignation letter when he was traveling Nepal in 2010. And Lily, his girlfriend, who was working

6、 in a travel agency in Beijing, quitted her job later. After the trip in Nepal, they stopped off in Lhasa where they met a new friend Nyima Tsering, a man who used to work at the Potala Palace but now is the superior of the orphanage.Nyima Tsering himself was an orphan in his childhood, and he was b

7、rought up by his sisters, so he quite understands the feeling of having no parents. Shigatse is his hometown where he brewed an idea of adopting orphans in the beginning. In the end of 2007, he decided to help two orphans in a family and adopted them. Four years later, he got the official approval f

8、rom the local government to establish an orphanage with the name of “Nuo Bei”, which means to double the promise. So far, there have been 24 orphans, with 9 young kids living there while the rest of them either studying in other areas in Tibet or in other cities for high schools and even universitie

9、s. Lily told me that all of the kids were brought by Nyima Tsering from the neighboring counties or villages when he was informed that there was an orphan. Most of the kids actually still have relatives who are also struggling to make a living for their own big family, so the orphanage can be a bett

10、er shelter for the poor kids after the death of their parents. An eight-year-old boy also named Nyima Tsering lost his parents when the house was on fire 6 years ago. The fire spread quickly and went out of hand, and his parents failed to survive after they saved the little boy by throwing him out o

11、f the window. At two years old, having no home to go back and no relatives to rely on, Nyima Tsering was brought to the orphanage where he has been taken a good care of by the older sister of the superior. During the first 2 years, he still suffered from the terrible fire, having nightmares from tim

12、e to time. Thanks to Grandma (everyone in the orphanage calls the older sister Grandma) years of considerate care and love, the little boy eventually stepped out from shadows of the family tragedy. Now, he is studying the third year in a local elementary school, like many of other children, very muc

13、h enjoying his happy time with classmates in school, a naughty but intelligent boy. Among the orphans, Nyima Tsering could be the special one because of the misfortune on him; he received more love as well as stricter supervisions from Grandma as if he was her own grandchild.Around 1:30 PM, Wu Wei c

14、ame back with four primary school kids (Nyima Tsering, Tenzin Nyima, Dechen, and Tseten Tsangjo). Playful and curious, they showed up in the back yard to see who was the new visitor today and then disappeared. Usually, they finish their homework in the tea house before the lunch is ready to be serve

15、d by Lily. Grandma works in the tea house helping with milk tea and noodles, so when the four kids do their homework there, she can still keep her eyes peeled on that.This evening, the four primary school kids were retained by the teacher after the class till 8:00 PM because they didnt do well in th

16、e homework. When we went back to the orphanage for supper, everyone was in the dining room. Nyima Tsering, the superior and Wu Wei rent this three-floor property in September, and they make the best use of the roof as the kitchen, dining room, and the classroom where kids do their homework.
