2、ia is a country in the Southern Hemisphere comprising the worlds smallest continent and a number of islands in the Southern, Indian and Pacific Oceans. Australias neighbouring countries are Indonesia, East Timor and Papua New Guinea to the north, the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and New Caledonia to the

3、 northeast, and New Zealand to the southeast. The continent of Australia has been inhabited for over 40,000 years by Indigenous Australians. After sporadic visits by fishermen from the north and by European explorers and merchants starting in the 17th century, the eastern half of the continent was c

4、laimed by the British in 1770 and officially settled as the penal colony of New South Wales on 26 January 1788. As the population grew and new areas were explored, another five largely self-governing Crown Colonies were successively established over the course of the 19th century. On 1 January 1901,

5、 the six colonies federated and the Commonwealth of Australia was formed. Since federation, Australia has maintained a stable liberal democratic political system and remains a Commonwealth Realm. The current population of around 20.4 million is concentrated mainly in the large coastal cities of Sydn

6、ey, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.Warming up by looking and saying Look at the photo? What is it?Yes, it is a Tammar Wallaby. The Tammar Wallaby is a small member of the kangaroo family and is the type species for research on kangaroos and marsupials. They are found on offshore islands on

7、the South Australian and Western Australian coast. They are classified as vermin on Kangaroo Island, where they seasonally breed up to large numbers and damage the echidna habitat on the island. Tammar Wallabies are also found in New Zealand where they were transported from the South Australian main

8、land population which has since been driven to extinction by feral cats and foxes. Also known as the Darma Wallaby, the Tammar Wallabys small size (approx 8kg, similar to a large cat) and ease of keeping in captivity makes it a popular zoo animal.Warming up by listening to THE SONG OF AUSTRALIA THE
