Thought pattern determines how a language expresses meanings. Therefore, thought pattern difference (TPD) is a critical factor which causes the difference
2、of language expressions. The thought pattern of English is abstract, analytic, linear, and objective, while the thought pattern of Chinese is imagic, synthetic, spiral and subjective. This fact causes differences at lexical, syntactical and text structural levels in language expressions. Consequentl
3、y, the transformation between the two languages is unavoidable from that difference. Interpretation is an approach of language translating, which has its own features compared to translation. Interpretation is much more than a transformation between characters and words. It is a communication-orient
4、ed and meaning conveying-targeted transformation between languages and even cultures in a certain context. Therefore, interpretation quality is evaluated with its own standard. In the course of interpretation, an influence of thought pattern difference is obvious. A flashback is made in the thesis a
5、bout the relationship between thought pattern difference (TPD) and the expression of language, and the standard of interpretation quality. The research method in this thesis is a combination of analyzing case of interpretation and researching text material of interpretation. Then, the relationship b
6、etween thought pattern difference (TPD) and interpretation quality is discussed. With an introduction to English and Chinese thought patterns on expressions of each language, an analysis of the effect of thought pattern difference on interpretation quality is made at 4 lexical, syntactical, and text
7、 structural levels. Accordingly, thought pattern difference as a significant factor which influences interpretation quality is put forward in the thesis. Finally, tactics coping with the influence caused by thought pattern difference are mentioned at lexical level, syntactical level, and text struct
8、ural level. Tactics are summarized as Use of Category Words, Conversion of Parts of Speech, Use of Figurative Words and Proper Addition of Supplementary Words; Explanation of Sentence Meaning, Change of Sentence Perspective and Change of Different Cohesive Way; Reconstruction, Text Focus Readjusting

Depending on these series of tactics, a way which can mitigate the negativity brought by thought pattern difference in interpretation could hopefully be found for improving interpretation quality. 10、1 Introduction 1.1 The Background of the Study In human history, when two or more cultures or languages encounter, interpreters mediate between them. Interpreting prevails in human activities and plays a significant role in promoting human progress; two different minds arrive at understanding, conci
11、liation and sharing of ideas and thoughts. However, the booming of interpreting as a profession did not occur until the inauguration of Paris Peace Conference after the First World War, where English was for the first time considered as a second official language rather than French, entailing freque
12、nt exchanges between the two official languages. After the Second World War, the establishment of the UN propelled the thriving of interpreting in a worldwide range. In 1953, the international prestigious organization in interpreting, AIIC (the International Association of Conference Interpreters) w
13、as founded in Zurich, Switzerland, promoting the global development of professional interpreting, including that in China. Chinas interpreting profession is closely related to the countrys economic development. Since the implementation of Reform and Opening-Up Policy, the interpreting profession has
14、 been in great demand and therefore, more and more professional interpreters have been cultivated. As interpreting profession develops, the need for a theoretic backup is growing. The research on interpreting quality has its own development track since its birth in the 1970s, and nowadays quality is
15、 one of the most important themes in 6 interpreting research. Meta (2001) published an issue specializing on quality. Many voices are heard on the importance of the research on interpreting quality. “Situated at the interface between theory and practice, this area of research evokes strong reactions
16、 from customers and practitioners alike” (Schlesinger: 1994). “Mackintosh focuses on quality as one of the basic themes which constitute the backbone of the Associations current activities and which will be taken into account in any possible restructuring” (Schlesinger: 1994). Moreover, AIIC also “sees quality of service and professional standards as one of its major objectives” (Kurz 2001:395). What are critical factors which can affect interpretation quality? Tan (2008) believes that the
