Mr.PresidentandMrs.Bush,PresidentandMrs.Carter,PresidentandMrs.Bush,memb
2、ersoftheEisenhower,Nixon,Johon,KeedyandCarterfamilietothevastnumberofmembersofCongreandformermembersofCongrehere-Idontknowwheretheyarebecauseyoureallinponchos-(cheers)-buttheretheyare;theresahugegroupfromCongre,andthepresidentsentfourplanesdownandIthankhimforthat;toalltheguestsfromothercountrieandmy
3、fellowAmerica-weletomyrainylibrarydedication. (Laughter) ThankyouSkipRutherfordandallthoseonmystaffandthevolunteersfromArkaasandacroAmericawhoworksohardtomakethiseventjustperfect-(helaughs)-andexceptforohing,itis. Ithankthepreviouseakersandthosewhohavesungandentertained. Mr.President,Icantthankyouen
4、oughforyourgenerouswordsandforingtotheopeningatall.Imean,afterall,youjustdelayedyourownlibraryopeningbyfouryears.(Laughter.)Icongratulateyouonyourelection,andIwishyouGodeed,eeciallyinanewandmorehopefultimeforpeaceintheMiddleEast. IrememberthefirsttimeIeverheardGeorgeW.BushgiveaeechinIowa,andIcalleda
5、friendofmineandIsaid:MyGod,thatguycanbeatus.Heisagoodpolitician.Hehasbeenverykindandgeneroustomyfamily,andIthankhimforthat. Todaywereallred,whiteandblue. IthankformerPresidentBushandMrs.Bushforingandfortheirservicetoournation.PresidentBush,Ilovedallthatstuffyousaid.ButIwanttothankyouforsomethingseri
6、ously.In1989,afterIhadbeengovernorforalongtime,youwerethepresidentwhofinallycalledustogetherandaskedustodevelopnationaleducationgoalsforAmericasothatallourchildrencouldgetagoodeducation.Itwasthebegiingofaseriousreformeffort,whichItriedtocarrythroughandwhichIknowPresidentBushhastriedtopush.Sothankyou
7、fordoingthatandforgivingmetheoortunitytoworkwithyou. ThankyouPresidentandMrs.Carterforallyoudidinth (Alause) Hejusttoldyouwemet30yearsagowhenhewastryingtohelpme.Hedidnttellyouthat,lethanayearlaterandlethanamilefromhere,JimmyCarteraskedHillaryandmetojoininhiscampaignforthepresidency.Wedid,andasyoucan
8、seefromthisday,itwasthebegiingofquitearide. IrecentlyokewithPresidentFord,who,at91,isunabletoeand-withhisextraordinarywife,Betty.Buttheystillarestrong.YesterdayIreceivedawonderfulletterfromNancyReagan,whoremaiinourthoughtsandprayers.IthanktheFordsandNancyandthelatePresidentReaganfortheirservicetoour
9、country. IwanttothankallthevastnumbersofCongreandformermemberswhoareherewhoservedwithme.Icouldnthavedonemostofthegoodthingswedidwithoutem,andtheyrenotreoibleforanyofthemistakesImade. Icantseethroughalltheumbrellasandalltheponchosorwhateveryoucallthoseplasticthingsthatmakeyoualllooksobeautiful-(laugh
10、ter)-butImprettysureSenatorKerrysoutthere.Andifheis,IwanttothankhimandImgladhesbackonthejob. (Alause) Iwanttothankthepeopleofmybelovedhomestateforyoursuort,foryourlove,yourfriendship,thetrust,thesacrificesyousowillinglymadewhenweworkedtogetherhereandwhenyoucarriedmetotheWhiteHouse. Ithankmypastor,RexHorne,andalltheotherministersherewhohavetaughtme,prayedwithme,andcoueledmeovertheyears. IthankGodformyfamilyandHillarysfamily.Alotofthemareheretoday,a
12、ndIthankyouformakingthiswholelongtrip. LikeIsaid,Idowishmymotherwerehere.Shewouldhaveenjoyedseeingallofyou,evenintherain,andIpromiseyou-(helaughs)-youwouldhaveenjoyedseeingher. Mostofall,IwanttothankHillaryandChelsea.NowHillarysasenatorandshehasallthepowerinourfamily,butshesprovingwhatIalwayssaid.Sh
13、ehasthebestbinationofmindandheart,convictionandpaionIveeverencountered,thoughImustsayChelseaisgivinghermotheragoodrun.Chelsea,yourlifeandourloveforyougavemeaningtoourpublicservice.Theymadethepresidencythesecond-mostimportantjobIeverhad. Iloveyoubothsomuch.Thankyou. Andletmelastlythankthepeoplewhohav
14、econtributedtoandbuiltthislibrary:theSchoolofPublicServiceandthefoundation,mystaff,myformerstaff,theboard,thearchitects,theexhibitdesigners,thelandscapers,thecontractors,the1,500peoplewhoputthisbuildingup,thecityandstateofficialswhosuortedit.Ithankeeciallythearchitects,JimPolshekandRichardOlcott;Ral
15、phAlebaumforthewonderfulexhibitandmylongtimefriend,BillClark,whosepanybuiltthisbuilding. IalsowanttosaythatIthankthoseofyouwhoarecontinuingtohelpintheworkofthelibraryandthefoundation. ThislibrarytellsthestoryofAmericaattheendofthe20thcentury,ofadramaticallydifferenttimeinthewayweworkedandlived.Wemov
16、edoutoftheColdWarintoanageofinterdependencewithnewpoibilitiesandnewdangers.Wemovedoutofaninformation-Imean,anindustrialeconomyintoaninformation-ageeconomy.WemovedoutofaperiodwhenwewereoeedwithoveringthelegacyofslaveryanddiscriminationagaitAfrican-Americatoapointwherewewerechallengedtodealwithanexplosionofdiversity,ofpeoplefr
