2、怎样的翻译手段，即强调译者作为翻译行为的主体的重要性。此外，功能主义学派还提出 两组原则：译文内部通顺的原则，和译文与源文一致的原则。 本文从功能主义的角度对小说飘 （Gone with the Wind）的两个中文译本分别采用 foreignization 和 domesticaion 两种不同策略的原因进行分析和评述。 希望通过这样的讨论和 分析加深译者对这两种概念的认识和理解，并能将其更好地应用到翻译实践中去。 本文首先介绍了 foreignization, domestication 及 functionalism 这些理论的内容和其产生、发 展状况。然后介绍小说飘及其两个中文译本的情
3、况。随后，对这两个译本进行对比，并 利用理论进行具体分析。 最后得出结论： foreignization 和 domestication 融合使用才会产生优 秀译作。 Abstract As two basic approaches in translation, foreignization and domestication have been in the focus of fierce argument ever since 1995 when Lawrence Venuti first brought them to our attention. Different opinions
4、 on whether to adopt one approach or the other in the translation process have resulted in the translation field in many enlightened ideas and even works. In this thesis the author intends to discuss the choice of foreignization and domestication in English-Chinese translation from a functional poin
5、t of view. Functionalism advocates the importance of the translator, that is to say, whether a foreignization approach or a domestication approach should be adopted depending on what aim or skopos the translator holds. And according to this theory, there is no simple good or bad translation as long
6、as a translation realizes its function. The thesis chooses Margaret Mitchells Gone with the Wind as the material for analysis and the translated versions are by Mr. Fu Donghua and Mr. Dai Kan, Li Yeguang and Zhuang Yichuan. These two versions are chosen because they can be viewed as representatives
7、in the application of the two translation approaches, foreignization and domestication. Other translation versions of translation are also referred to in the thesis though. The thesis consists of four parts. The first chapter is an introduction to the overall contents. The second chapter elaborates
8、on concepts and theories of domestication, foreignization, and functionalism. The third chapter is the case study of the translation of the novel. 14、.1 Theme of the Thesis The big success of the Hollywood movie Gone with the Wind causes peoples great zealot on the novel which was first published in 1936. The earliest Chinese translation of the novel appeared in 1940 by Mr. Fu Donghua. Ever since then, Chinese translators of different ages never
15、stopped in producing new versions of the novel. A comparison of these translations discloses many differences in translation methods, among which the most obvious one is the application of either domestication or foreignization as a major strategy during the translational process. This thesis intend
16、s to elaborate on this topic. As two counter-directional translational strategies and inclinations applied by translators during their translational process, domestication and foreignization have long existed. The original ideas of the two concepts of domestication and foreignization can be traced back to Schleiermarcher and his essay in 1813 Ueber die verschiedenen Methoden des Uebersezens (Methods of Translation), and was processed and coined into domestica
