6、derived,isfromtheHebrewpesach(Passover)fromtheverbformhepassedover.InExodusXIIwereadofthenightinEgyptwhentheangelofdeathpassedoverthedwellingsoftheIsraelites,sosparingtheirfirstborn.Hence,thePassoverorJewishPesach,celebratedduringNisan,thefirstmonthoftheHebrewyear. ChristianOrigins Itwasatthefeastof
7、thePassoverinJerusalemthatJesus,aJew,wascrucifiedandrosefromthedead.AnameforEaster,therefore,isPasch,invariousspellings,andchurchesthroughouttheEastandWestcelebrateEasterasamajorfeastrankingwithChristmas,witnessthehotcrossbunorboondistributedamongthefaithful. ThereisnoindicationoftheobservanceoftheE
8、asterfestivalintheNewTestament,orinthewritingsoftheapostolicFathers.ThesanctityofspecialtimeswasanideaabsentfromthemindsofthefirstChristians,whocontinuedtoobservetheJewishfestivals,thoughinanewspirit,asmemorationsofeventswhichthosefestivalshadforeshadowed.ThusthePassover,withanewconceptionaddedtoitofChristasthetruePaschalLambandthefirstfruitsfromthedead(vernalequinoxwintertospringtheme),continuedtobeobserved,andbecametheChristianEaster. （1）
