When pupils are to learn a foreign language for mainly verbal communication for practical purposes across national and cultural boundaries, teachers begin to re-assess the k

13、ind of non-linguistic knowledge they introduce into their lessons. Rather than literary history or criticism, they begin to consider what might be needed for successful interaction with members of another society and culture. Second, the extension of teaching to all pupils requires teachers to consi

14、der the interests of those who will not continue language learning beyond secondary education. Finally, the semantic and social analysis of language makes teachers more conscious of the need to contextualise language by reference to its use in settings pupils are most likely to meet. These various f

15、actors encourage teachers to introduce into their lessons information about the way of life in a foreign Page xiv countryor, using the term in its social anthropological sense, the countrys culture. This is then, in summary form, the configuration of factors in language teaching which forms the cont

16、ext for our research. Empirical Researchand Development The need for rigorous evidence of beneficial effects of language learning has not been well served. The issues are without doubt complex. Reviews and introductions (e.g. Buttjes, 1981; Byram, 1989; Zarate, 1986; Seelye, 1984) reveal a well established interest in cultural studies especially in Germany and the United Statesbut little empirical research.
