2、 Ph.D. candidates.A thesis is required by many Masters programsStudents doing a “Project” do not need to follow thesis format guidelines. 3、cotton”, acid-free, watermarked, 81/2 x11 paper for your “library copy”Only 1 library copy needs to be on “thesis” paperStandard “copier” paper for all other copiesFonts, Font Size, and Font Variations:Consistent font and font size for all text (including page numbers)Font size that is no less than

4、10 and no greater than 12 for the thesis text.FontsnThe Graduate School recommends using the following fonts:PalatinoBookmanGaramondNew Century SchoolbookHelveticaNew Times RomanTimesArialnScript or handwriting fonts are not allowedMargins and Misc.Consistency is the key!Margins must be a minimum of

5、 1 inches from the left hand margin, 1 inches from the top margin, 1 inch from the right hand margin and 1 inch from the bottom. nA physical page number is on every page (except for the “Signature” and “Title” pages)nAssign lower case Roman numerals to all “preliminary pages”nAssign Arabic numerals

12、h name being written on diploma.nAll previous degrees may be listed, no repeats.nLocation will always be Fairbanks, Alaska.nDate will be May, August or December.nNo comma between month and year.The Abstract PageThe most read portion of your thesis is the Abstract.The Abstract will ALWAYS be page iii

13、. (This is the first page that has the page number physically printed on the page.)n Use correct page margins. Maximum length for Masters thesis is 200 words (unless microfilming is desired, then it is 150 words).Maximum length for a Ph.D. dissertation is 350 words.The Abstract PageFollowing the gui

14、delines in the Thesis Formatting Handbook for writing the Abstract, include: The problem addressed or objective of the study and why the work was undertaken;What was done generally, not specifically;What were the results, general trends or the most important findings; andWhat was concluded, if separ

15、ate from the results.In-Text citations are not permitted in the Abstract. Table of ContentsnType the word “Page” above the column of page numbersnUse leader dots.nMust be left & right justifiednInclude all chapters and sections (at all levels)nEach title in the TOC must match the title in the text E

16、XACTLYnIf you only have one Appendix, list it in the TOC as “Appendix” following “References” or “Literature Cited”.nIf there are multiple appendices, use “List of Appendices” The “List of Appendices” follows the “List of Tables” in the TOC.List of Figures/List of Tables:“Leader dots” are required (

17、no “dashes”) and should extend completely and consistently to the page number.Page numbers on right-hand side should be “justified”. The word “Page” must be above the page numbers on the first page of the List of Figures and List of Tables (just like the Table of Contents).If List of Figures or List

18、 of Tables is more than one page, subsequent pages start at 11/2 inches from the top.Titles in the text and in the List of Figures and List of Tables must match EXACTLY.Both the List of Figures and List of Tables must be spaced in the same manner as the text. However, if a second line is required fo

19、r the title, it can be single-spaced.Body of Thesis PagesnThe first page of the Introduction or Chapter 1 will always be page 1.n If Chapter 1 starts at page 10 (following Roman numeral IX) and not page 1 - then you have set the page numbering incorrectly. nConsistent heading format. Capitalization,

20、 use of bold, italics, or underlining must be consistent for a particular level of heading or subheading throughout a monograph and within each chapter (consistent with journal requirements) for the manuscript formatnConsistent indentation/spacing at the beginning of paragraphsnFigures and Tables mu

21、st be numbered in order of appearance in the text. Define all abbreviations and acronyms the first time they appear in the text, except for those which are generally understood by almost everyone. (such as DNA; US; standard abbreviations for units like g, ATM, L, or m; and standard abbreviations for

22、 states like AK are examples that do not need to be defined)The numbers one to ten should be written out, unless the number is a value with associated units (e.g., 1 g or 1 gram, not one gram, but “one large beaker was used to collect the sample” not “1 large beaker was used”)Abbreviations, Acronyms

23、, and NumbersBlock QuotesnQuotations over three lines must be typed block style with indentation and no quotation marks or in the style appropriate to the field, and must be spaced consistent with the body of the text References, Literature Cited, etc.Use a heading (e.g., REFERENCES, LIST OF REFEREN

24、CES, LITERATURE CITED, etc.) consistent with the style manual applicable to your discipline.References may be single-spaced within an entry and double-spaced (or 1.5 spaced) between entriesAvoid splitting entries between pages. Double check that your references are in:Alphabetical order ORNumerical

25、order References, Literature Cited, (continued)DOUBLE and TRIPLE check that the references you have cited are listed in the reference section and cited correctly. (Citation errors are very common and can be easily avoided if checked and cross-referenced. If we see more than 10 citation errors we wil

26、l stop reviewing the thesis and send it back to the student requiring they correct and check their citations. This could result in a student not graduating on time.)Bibliographic SoftwareEndNote is available for all graduate students.VPN is needed to use EndNote from a non-UAF location.RefWorks is a

27、vailable through the UAF Rasmuson Library.Free services: Mendeley mendeleyZOTERO :/zotero.org/Figure ExamplenAnything that is not a Table is considered a Figure.nFigure captions must appear BELOW the Figure.nAll writing in figures should be at least 6 pt., legible, and reproducible. If possible use

The left margin remains 1 inches.Monograph vs. ManuscriptHow to ChoosenIf you intend to publish your thesis as two or more separate papers, the manuscript format is highly recommended. It is not necessary that the manusc

33、ripts be accepted or published already.nIn the manuscript format, material that does not “fit” in one of the manuscripts may be included in Appendices.nThe monographic format is fine for relatively short Masters theses, especially if they are not intended for publication. nYou may use the monographi

34、c format for Ph.D. dissertations, but you will have extra work to prepare publishable manuscripts.ManuscriptnAuthorship You must be first author on each manuscript included in thesis. You must include a footnote to the chapter title indicating authors and name of journal to which the manuscript has

35、been or will be submitted (looks just like a citation).nArrangement of PagesSee page 26 of the UAF Thesis Format WorkbooknAbstractChapters can have separate abstracts in addition to the required general abstract.nFigures, Tables, References, and AppendicesFigures and tables may be embedded but most

36、journals require them to be located at the end of the manuscript.References and appendices for each manuscript appear at the end of that manuscript (chapter).Manuscript (cont.)nGeneral Introduction and General Conclusion may have their own or combined “general” References/Literature Cited section.nD

37、O NOT photocopy the published paper out of the journal and include the copy in your thesis (nor can you just bind in a reprint). Rather, you must print it anew, in a font and style consistent with the rest of the thesis and continuously paginated.nNames, addresses, and keywords required for journals

References and Appendices must be placed at the end

41、 of the Thesis (not after each chapter). Additional InformationnCopyrighted Material within your thesis: Obtain written, “hard copy” permission from holders of copyrighted material you wish to use in your thesis. This is mandatory.“Hard copy” permission can come in the form of a letter, e-mail, etc

42、and must be included somewhere (appendix is fine) in the thesis.nResearch Integrity ApprovalsIRB/IACUC/Biosafety, etc. approvals must be included in the thesis.Fold-out PagesThe fold of fold-out pages must be at least 1/4” inside the right margin so the pages dont get cut off!The Graduate School wil

43、l provide 11x17 thesis paper upon requestWhen submitting thesis for review or submitting final copies, fold-out pages must be folded and placed in their proper location within the thesisNow that you have the thesis writtennDefend your thesis and turn in your “Report on Thesis/Dissertation Defense” f

44、ormIf you are a Ph.D. student, you must request an “Outside Examiner” from the UAF Graduate School at least two weeks prior to your defense.nHave your thesis reviewed by your committee, Dept. Chair and appropriate College/School Dean (be aware of their deadlines)nHave them sign the signature page (1

51、t number of copies that you paid to have bound. nWe keep the signed signature pages in our office and we will make the correct number of copies (if there are not enough originals) and insert them into your copies to be bound.What Happens Next ContinuednThe Graduate School checks to make sure all the

52、 required corrections are made.nCopies to be bound are boxed up and sent to the Rasmuson Library (who sends the thesis out of state to be bound)nA “Final Clearance” form is sent to the Graduation Department stating that all required paperwork and theses have been received.nThe Graduation Department

53、certifies your requirements have been met for graduation.nThesis (699) GradesAll Thesis grades (699) should currently appear “DF”Grades will only be changed when the Graduate School receives your final thesis copies for binding and a “Final Clearance” is issued to the Graduation Department.nYOU GRAD
