Tao, in Dao De Jing (Classic of theWay of Power), means the way of ultimate reality,which exists beyond t

15、he physical sense of men. Tao isalso the way of the universe. It moves in endless cyclesand never changes. All life comes from it, but nothingproduced by Tao lasts forever. Tao also refers to the wayman should order his life to keep it in line with the naturalorder of the universe. Taoists reject se

16、lf-assertiveness,competition and ambition. They are indifferent to thingslike rank, profuse(过度的)luxury and vulgar show.They would make friends with nature rather than conqueror dominate it. Taoism was indigenous to the Han nationality. Itoriginated around the second century AD. ZhangDaoling (张道陵) is

17、 credited as its founder, Lao Zi isregarded as its master and his work, Dao De Jing is itsmain doctrine. From the 14th century it developed intotwo main philosophies: Quanzhen Tao (全真道),emphasizing self-cultivation to attain immortality andZhengyi Tao(正一道), involving belief in charms andspells(符咒).

18、Taoism has gods of the Town, Land, Door, Kitchen, and wealth. At the head of these gods are Lao Ziand Jade Emperor (玉皇大帝). The God of Wealth,called Marshall Zhao, is believed to bring people a bigfortune. The God of Door, on the other hand, is supposedto keep away demons, while the God of Kitchen is

19、 incharge of every households good fortune andmisfortune.Taoism mainly preaches Wuwei (Non-action). Theconcept does not mean to do nothing as it literallysuggests. It means to follow the natural flow of natureand let everything be what it naturally will be, not tryingagainst it to satisfy nature. Th

20、e concept was Taoistliving attitude and utopian governing method. Taoismalso advocates Wuyu (Non-intention), which requirespeople not to desire too much from life. 21、ciples of the universe. One cannot existwithout the other, and they often represent opposites inrelations to each other.
