、eekend editions. Could the bad old days of economic decline be about to return? Since OPEC agreed to supply-cuts in March, the price of crude oil has jumped to almost $26 a barrel, up from less than $10 last December. This near-tripling of oil prices calls up scary memories of the 1973 oil shock, wh

、en prices quadrupled, and 1979-1980, when they also almost tripled. Both previous shocks resulted in double-digit inflation and global economic decline. So where are the headlines warning of gloom and doom this time? The oil price was given another push up this week when Iraq suspended oil exports.

、Strengthening economic growth, at the same time as winter grips the northern hemisphere, could push the price higher still in the short term。 Yet there are good reasons to expect the economic consequences now to be less severe than in the 1970s. In most countries the cost of crude oil now accounts f

、or a smaller share of the price of petrol than it did in the 1970s. In Europe, taxes account for up to four-fifths of the retail price, so even quite big changes in the price of crude have a more muted effect on pump prices than in the past。Rich economies are also less dependent on oil than they wer

、e, and so less sensitive to swings in the oil price. Energy conservation, a shift to other fuels and a decline in the importance of heavy, energy-intensive industries have reduced oil consumption. Software, consultancy and mobile telephones use far less oil than steel or car production. For each dol

、lar of GDP (inconstant prices) rich economies now use nearly 50% less oil than in 1973. The OECD estimates in its latest Economic Outlook that, if oil prices averaged $22 a barrel for a full year, compared with $13 in 1998, this would increase the oil import bill in rich economies by only 0.25-0.5%

、of GDP. That is less than one-quarter of the income loss in 1974 or 1980. On the other hand, oil-importing emerging economies to which heavy industry has shifted have become more energy-intensive, and so could be more seriously squeezed。 One more reason not to lose sleep over the rise in oil prices

、is that, unlike the rises in the 1970s, it has not occurred against the background of general commodity-price inflation and global excess demand. A sizable portion of the world is only just emerging from economic decline. TheEconomists commodity price index is broadly unchanging from a year ago. In

、1973 commodity rices jumped by 70%, and in 1979 by almost 30%。 56. The main reason for the latest rise of oil price is _ A. global inflation. 40、ude oil prices. C. manufacturing industry has been seriously squeezed. D. oil price changes have no significant impact on GDP. 59. We can draw a conclusion from the text that_ A. oil-price shocks are less shocking now. B. inflation seems irrelevant to oil-price shocks. C. energy conservation can kee

、ome suggestions I have closely watched my generation, known as The Millennials. for 29 years now. Joel Stein wrote an extensive piece on Millennials and he remains rather optimistic about our potential. I hesitate to share his optimism because of a paradox (矛盾的现象)we seem to exhibit, namely, that the

、re are more avenues for us to entertain ourselves than ever before, yet we are more 2023考试备考资料word版本欢迎下载 bored than ever before. Entertainment has never been more varied. We have more cable channels, television shows, and movies than ever before. Internet providers allow instant viewing of almost an

Every generation develops these habits at a certain age, but Millennials seem to be extending this phase of life as they postpone marriage. Some of this is undoubtedly due to The Great

、 Recession. Millennials arc having a difficult time finding jobs; only 47 percent of 16-to-24-year-olds are employed, the smallest share since government stared recording data in 1948. But do Millennials respond to these economic troubles by doing whatever it takes to make ends meet? Hardlv. In fact

、, of the four generations Pew Research has data for, the Millennial generation does not cite work ethic (勤奋工作)as distinctive of itself. Millennials want to save the world, but they sit and wait for that world-changing opportunity to be handed to them. Instead of working 2-3 jobs, launching a busines

、s, or doing what it takes to succeed, they retreat. Millennials may be the first generation to have a lower standard of living than their parents, but with this response to adversity (逆境), perhaps deservingly so. Much ink has been spilled in management books discussing how to get the most out of the

、se youths in the workplace. Largely, they come to the same conclusion: Millennials are entitled, over-confident, and expect too much too quickly. We should not be surprised. 70、 management books. D. They think they are young and energetic. It is all very well to blame traffic jams, the cost of petrol and the quick pace of modern life, but manners on the roads are becoming horrible. Everybody knows that the nicest men become monsters behind the wheel. It is all very well, a

、gain, to have a tiger in the tank, but to have one in the drivers seat is another matter altogether. You might tolerate the odd road-hog, the rude and inconsiderate driver, but nowadays the well-mannered motorist is the exception to the rule. (Perhaps the situation calls for a “Be Kind to Other Driv

、ers” campaign, otherwise it may get completely out of hand.) Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense too. It takes the most cool-headed and good-tempered of drivers to resist the temptation to revenge when subjected to uncivilized behavior. On the other hand, a little politeness goe

、s a long way towards 2023考试备考资料word版本欢迎下载 relieving the tensions of motoring. A friendly nod or a wave of acknowledgment in response to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of goodwill and tolerance so necessary in modern traffic conditions. But such acknowledgments of politeness are a

、ll too rare today. Many drivers nowadays dont even seem able to recognize politeness when they see it. However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous. Typical examples are the driver whobrakes violently to allow a car to emerge from a side street at some hazard to following traffic, when a few

、seconds later the road would be clear anyway; or the man who waves a child across a zebra crossing into the path of oncoming vehicles that may be unable to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they care to. It always amazes me that the highwa

、ys are not covered with the dead bodies of these grannies. A veteran driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if motorists learnt to filter correctly into traffic streams one at a time without causing the total blockages that give rise to bad temper. Unfortunately, modern motorists

、 cant even learn to drive, let alone master the subtler aspects of roadsmanship. Years ago the experts warned us that the car ownership explosion would demand a lot more give-and-take from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take this message to heart. 76. According to this passage, tro

Experts have long pointed out that in the face of car-ownership explosion, _. A. road users should make mo

In the writers opinion, _. A. strict traffic regulations are badly needed B. drivers should apply road poli

、teness properly C. rude drivers should be punished D. drivers should avoid traffic jams In the atmosphere, carbon dioxide acts rather like a one-way mirrorthe glass in the roof of a greenhouse which allows the sun s rays to enter but prevents the heat from escaping. According to a weather experts pr

、ediction, the atmosphere will be 3C warmer in the year 2050 than it is today, if man continues to burn fuels at the present rate. If this warming up took place, the ice caps in the poles would begin to melt, thus raising sea level several metres and severely flooding coastal cities. Also, the increa

、se in atmospheric temperature would lead to great changes in the climate of the northern hemisphere, possibly resulting in an alteration of the earths chief food-growing zones. In the past, concern about a man-made warming of the earth has concentrated on the Arctic because the Antarctic is much col

、der and has a much thicker ice sheet. But the weather experts are now paying more attention to West Antarctic, which may be affected by only a few degrees of warming: in other words, by a warming on the scale that will 2023考试备考资料word版本欢迎下载 possibly take place in the next fifty years from the burning

、 of fuels. Satellite pictures show that large areas of Antarctic ice are already disappearing. The evidence available suggests that a warming has taken place. This fits the theory that carbon dioxide warms the earth. However, most of the fuel is burnt in the northern hemisphere, where temperatures s

、eem to be falling. Scientists conclude, therefore, that up to now natural influences on the weather have exceeded those caused by man. The question is: Which natural cause has most effect on the weather? One possibility is the variable behavior of the sun. Astronomers at one research station have st

、udied the hot spots and “cold” spots (that is, the relatively less hot spots) on the sun. As the sun rotates, every 27.5 days, it presents hotter or “colder” faces to the earth, and different aspects to different parts of the earth. This seems to have a considerable effect on the distribution of the

、 earths atmospheric pressure, and consequently on wind circulation. The sun is also variable over along term: its heat output goes up and down in cycles, the latest trend being downward. Scientists are now finding mutual relations between models of solar-weather interactions and the actual climate o

、ver many thousands of years, including the last Ice Age. The problem is that the models are predicting that the world should be entering a new Ice Age and it is not. One way of solving this theoretical difficulty is to assume a delay of thousands of years while the solar effects overcome the inertia

、(惯性)of the earths climate. If this is right, the warming effect of carbon dioxide might thus be serving as a useful counte-balance to the suns diminishing heat. 81.It can be concluded that a concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere would _. A. prevent the suns rays from reaching the earths

、surface B. mean a warming up in the Arctic C. account for great changes in the climate in the northern hemisphere D. raise the temperature of the earths surface 82. 93、solar-weather interactions D. the causes affecting weather 83. Although the fuel consumption is greater in the northern hemisphere, temperatures there seem to be falling. This is _. A. mainly because the levels of carbon dioxide are rising B. possible because the ice caps in the poles are melting C.

、 exclusively due to the effect of the inertia of the earths climate D. partly due to variations in the output of solar energy 84. On the basis of their models, scientists are of the opinion that _. A.the climate of the world should be becoming cooler B. it will take thousands of years for the inerti

、a of the earths climate to take effect C. the man-made warming effect helps to increase the solar effects D. the new Ice Age will be delayed by the greenhouse effect 85. If the assumption about the delay of a new Ice Age is correct, _. A. the best way to overcome the cooling effect would be to burn

Others say that the opposite is true: 2023考试备考资料word版本欢迎下载 that international contests encourage false national pride and lead to misunderstanding and hatred. There is probably some truth in both arguments, but in r
