9、rybeginswithAntonat Dr. Ed Burleighs office,wherehelearnsthathehasabadheart.Thedoctorinformshimthathecannolongercontinuetoworkthefields,andshouldsticktolessstrenuouschoresaboutthehomeandbarn.TheRosickyfamilyskindnessisreflectedinDr. Burleighs (whomthefamilyreferstoas“Dr.Ed”)recollectionofthehospital

10、ityshownintheirhomeafterdeliveringaneighborsbaby.Hefeelssorryforthem,astheyneverflourishinlifedespitetheircompassionforothers.Part 2On his way home from the doctors, Rosicky stops at the general store to buy fabric and candy for his wife. Before returning home, he stops to admire the graveyard that

The snow reminds him that winter brings rest for nature and man.Whenhearriveshomeheexplainstohiswifethathisheart“aintsogoodlikeitusedtobe.”Togethertheyrecalltheirlovingmarriage,andthedifferencebetweenthemselvesandtheotherfarmersinthearea.TheRosickysprefertolivehappyandkeeptheir

12、childrenhealthy,ratherthanhavingmoneyandsellingtheircreamofftoacreamery.Part 3Outofworry, Mary travelstoseeDr.BurleightofindoutmoreaboutRosickysheart.Afterhervisit,shetalkswithherboystomakesurethatheisnotdoinganythingtoostrenuous.Finally,Rosickystopsfightingandgivesintothedoctorsorders.Rosickyspends

13、histimethatwinterstayingindoorsdoingcarpentryandtailoring.Hekeptallofhistoolsinonashelfin“Fatherscorner.”Whilesewing,hebeginsthinkingabouthispasttailoringinNewYorkCitywhenhefirstcametoAmerica.Althoughhiswageswereadequate,hedidnotsaveanymoneybecauseheloaneditouttofriends,wenttotheopera,andspentitongi

14、rls.Hewasunhappyinthecity,andrealizedthatheneededtobeincontactwiththeearth;soattheageof35,hemovedwesttoNebraskatostartanewlifeasafarmer.Part 4Rosickysoldestson,Rudolph,andhis“American”wife,Polly,rentafarmcloseby.RosickyisworriedabouttheirmarriagebecausePollyisacitygirl,notusedtohavingtobeonafarm.Hei

15、sconcernedthatbecauseofPollysunhappiness,Rudolphwilltakeajobinthecitywherehecanmakemoremoney,andshecanbearoundthelifesheisaccustomedto.RosickyofferstoloanthemthefamilycartogointotownonthisandfutureSaturdayevenings.Tomakesuretheygooutthatnight,RosickyalsodoesthedishesandcleansupthekitchenforPolly.Par

18、swhogavehimthemoneyheneeded.Pollyisextremelymovedbythisstory,anddecidesthatshewantstoinviteRudolphsfamilytotheirhomefoPart 6Attheendofthestory,Rosickyimaginesthefutureofhischildrenandhopesthattheydonotsufferlikehedidthroughoutthebeginningpartofhislife.RosickygoestoRudolphsfarmtohelphimtendtothealfal
