Those summer days of fun under the sun,careless andworryfree, drifting away into those breezy summernights.Its a concept somewhat romanticized by the media but stillpretty common in Western societies, and seemingly othercultures infiltrated by Western media. One can only

2、imagine mysurprise when my friend told me there were such things aswinter flings too. Thats right, winter flings. Strange as it seems,this was introduced to me by a friend from Toronto, a city onthe east coast of Canada. Im from the west coast of the country,so we cower in our homes when it hits -15

3、oC. Our pipes freeze,we have no running water, and sometimes we have noelectricity. Toronto lies on the east so it gets pretty nastywinters, sometimes dipping to -40oC. Im a winter wuss.She explained winter flings simply: It gets cold in winter, so itsnice to have someone you can snuggle with and be

4、 warm.When she put it that way, it made so much sense. Summerflings were all about the funness of summer while winter flingswere more focused on the idea of coziness and sharing that hotcup of cocoa.This is my first winter in Beijing and already Im beginning tobehold the wisdom of winter flings. Tem

5、peratures are droppingbut hearts are melting as people around me have beguncoupling up. Staunchly single just a month ago, noweverywhere I go, all I see are couples in their poofy jackets,holding hands, making plans and getting cozy.Does this recent coupling have anything to do with Singles Daybeing

6、 so close to winter? Perhaps being reminded of your singlestatus and the primal need to be warm is just too much to takefor many in Beijing. Or maybe Im just surrounded by peoplewho feel the sudden urge to be in relationships. Either way, Ibelieve there is more to winter flings than meets the eye an

7、d allthose keen on embarking on one should know what theyregetting themselves into.Winter has yet to hit hard, so these flings are a little prematurebut I dont think Im getting ahead of myself. What isconcerning with is how winter flings end. Winter technicallystarts in late December and goes all th

8、e way till March. It mayseem like just a couple of months, but those are the monthswhere the steps to commitment lie.Picture this. You start an innocent winter fling earlyDecember-ish. Youre all nice and toasty as you celebrate thefollowing holidays: Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa in December,time for b

9、eing together; New Years Day and Chinese New Yearin January, the time for new beginnings; and here it comes, thebig one, Valentines Day in February, the celebration of love. Bythe time March?CI suppose you can celebrate St. Patricks Daytoo?Crolls around, it will have snowballed into more than a flin

10、g,right?Maybe. Everyone is different after all and it would be arrogantof me to speak for anyone else, but friends have embarked onthese winter flings only to end in a strange place in betweendisappointment, sadness and for some the unfortunate feelingof regret. As new as the concept is to me, and h

11、owevertempting the thought is of snuggling together as you bothwatched the snow gently fall outside, winter flings still dontmeasure up to their sunnier counterparts in terms of flingyness.A lot more is at stake, thats for sure. After all, how dobarbecues and games of beach volleyball compare toChri

12、stmas/ Hanukkah/Kwanzaa, both New Years, and the bigone, V-day? True flingers will want out. Thats a big step towardcommitment, the exact opposite of a fling.There it is again. The C word. Commitment. Just the thought isenough to send the most fearless men and women running outthe door faster than y

13、ou can say “baby, its cold outside.” Didyou just cringe inwardly when you read that? Thats a signyoure still scared witless of the C word. Smart flingers will wantto stay away from winter flings, as they know all thecommitment involved this time of the year. Simplemindedflingers will jump in unthink

14、ingly only to jump back out as soonas they realize this.Fear not, believers of true winter love. Its perfectly possiblethat its not all doom and gloom in this chilly season. Someflingers find themselves perfectly happy with the situation theysometimes unwittingly waltzed into and change their flingy

15、ways. I have yet to see this happen but who knows, really? Imnew to this after all and this is just one persons take on it.Perhaps calling it a winter fling is a misnomer, or my initialassessment was wrong?Cwinter is just not a conduciveenvironment for flings.Only time will tell. Who knows? Maybe by the time the harshparts of winter roll around, my inner west coast winter wusswill wise up and want one too.
