Alarmed by growing alcohol abuse and rowdy behavior, colle

2、ge administrators, students, and companies that sell alcoholic beverages are promoting the theme of “drinking responsibly.”The past spring showed that, while making no attempt to prohibit drinking, many schools are keeping tabs on how much alcohol is available at campus functions and cracking down,

3、if necessary, when students go too far.For its part, the Distilled Spirits Council of America sent posters, pamphlets and other materials on responsible drinking to more than 100 colleges during the past year. In addition, the group has sponsored television spots featuring professional football play

4、ers that encourage young people to learn more about the proper uses of alcohol.Typical of such efforts on campus is Texas A & M Universitys “Lets Party” booklet, with a formula to determine how much beer, wine and liquor should be purchased for parties. “We are trying to promote responsible use of a

5、lcohol rather than turning our backs on it as we did for so many years,” says Jan Winniford, assistant director of student affairs.Fraternities, sororities and other campus groups at the University of Maryland now have to get an O.K. from the school and county government to buy liquor for parties. Y

6、ale has barred alcoholic beverages at university functions for freshmen.The University of Connecticut bans keg parties in dormitory rooms and confines them to designated campus locations. Student must be able to prove they are old enough to drink. The University of Wisconsin is urging fraternities a

7、nd sororities to hold “dry rushes” when recruiting members. Often, students themselves want alternatives to parties where “people end up too soused to make good conversation and cant even stand up to dance”, asserts Karen Rossini, a student at the University of Santo Clara in California.Growing in n

8、umber are campus events designed to publicize the dangers of drinking too much, too often. In late April, the University of Illinois held an “Alcohol Awareness Week” for talks on alcohol abuses and advice on “natural highs” such as jogging and yoga. Another feature: A nonalcoholic bar in the student

9、 union on “Fruit Juice Friday”.When students do get in trouble from drinking , now approaches are replacing traditional disciplinary measures. Kent State requires students sent to conduct court for drunken mischief such as fighting, damaging property and disrupting dorm life to take a one-semester c

10、ourse entitled “The Drug Alcohol”.Colleges are learning from each other how to deal with student drinking. In the Northeast, 70 schools formed the New England College Alcohol Network to share experiences.More colleges also are trying to confront the issue before it lands at their doorsteps. Wisconsi

11、n writes to parents of new freshmen encouraging family discussions of alcohol use. Goucher College in Baltimore sponsored a conference on drinking for high school seniors from 20 schools.Prompting all this antidrunkenness activity is concern about the rise in traffic deaths involving young people an

12、d the campus binges that often end in fights and vandalism. Police not long ago had to quiet a fraternity party at Texas Christian University, where damage from a raucous celebration totaled thousands of dollars. Alcohol was banned from a Dartmouth fraternity for two semesters after a party degenera

13、ted to brawling.Connecticut officials found that more than 80 percent of vandalism at one dormitory stemmed from drinking.Experts warn that the campaign against alcohol abuse on campus wont be easy. Students of campus drinking in California show 90 to 93 percent of all students drink, up from under

14、70 percent in the mid-1950s. Furthermore, women students now are as likely to drink as men. One survey found that 10 percent of the male students and 7 percent of the women missed up to three classes a semester because of hangovers .What such studies show is that trying to conquer the image that you
