4、andfiredthegun,andtheracewason.TheexcitementofthecrowdwaitingatthefinishlineatthenewlyconstructedreplicaofAthensancientstadiumwasbeyonddescription.SpiridonLouis,aGreekpostalworkercrossedthefinishlineafullsevenminutesaheadofthepack.Heused2hours,58minutes,and50secondsforthe40kilometerdistance(averagep
