What does convergence mean?The term media convergence is used a lot these days, but there is actually not a standard definition of what it means. In this lecture, we explo

3、re some of the trends producing convergence and theorize on how they are going to revolutionize journalism.Secondly, we will analyze whether convergence actually works in practice. Specifically, are there any print organizations that are successfully transitioning to video or TV formats as well? Is

4、TV news going to be a net winner or loser as webcasting gains greater footholds? Can organizations that provide free content on the Internet somehow monetize their news services?2. Whats a converged journalist to do?Once upon a time, journalists at established news organizations essentially had life

5、time employment if they wanted it. Media companies were so large, and profitable, that layoffs were virtually unheard of. What has happened today is that the economic model is broken: Although the demand for quality news is at record levels, the revenue streams from advertising have largely dried up

6、.That means todays journalists must be both professionally savvy in their reporting and editing skills and technologically adept as new media are created and new forms of storytelling emerge.In this lecture, well discuss how to successfully manage a professional journalism career in todays fast-pace

7、d, fast-changing media world.3. Media convergences impact on Asian newsgatheringIn some ways, Asia appears to be an island of stability in otherwise turbulent media waters. Print circulation is up, traditional broadcast news is strong and radio organizations still have large and loyal audiences.But

8、as we saw with the Mumbai hotel attacks, Asian journalism today is on the edge of some sweeping changes. No longer is it a matter of sending reporters and having them file something on deadline hours, or even days, later. With Twitter, cellphone video, text messaging, etc., Asian news is clearly goi

9、ng to be affected by the technologies already reshaping the U.S. Well explore the outlook for newsgathering methods in Asia.
