2、reathatcomprisesonedistrict(theoldtowndistrict)andfourcounties,includingtheLiijangnewtown,Dayanoldtown,Shuheoldtown(束河古镇),Baishaoldtown(白沙古镇),andpartsoftheTigerLeapingGorge.TheLijiangoldtownhasahistorygoingbackmorethan800yearsandwasonceaconfluencefortradealongtheoldteahorseroad.TheLijiangoldtownisfa
3、mousforitsorderlysystemofwaterwaysandbridges.IthasbeencalledtheVeniceoftheEast.TheoldtownofLijiangdiffersfromotherancientChinesecitiesinarchitecture,historyandthecultureofitstraditionalresidentstheNaxipeople,thereforepeopletherearecalled胖金哥and胖金妹(maleandfemalerespectively).Onethirdofthetownwasdestro
4、yedbyanearthquakeinFebruary1996.Lijiangoldtown(includingDayan,BaishaandShuhe)wasregisteredontheUNESCOWorldHeritageListinDecember4,1997.Sincethen,thelocalgovernmenthastakenmoreresponsibilityforthedevelopmentandprotectionoftheoldcity.Lijiangstourismalsoboomed,andtravellersfromaroundtheworldfloodedin;a
5、lthoughmanylocalsfearthatduetomuchofthedevelopment,theoldtownofLijiangwillloseitsappeal.Recently,thegovernmenthasstartedtodevelopadditionaloldcitysectionsadjacenttothesiteoftheoriginaloldcity.Thisistoaccommodatethelargenumberoftourists,particularlyHanChinese,whowalkthecobblestonestreets(carsarenotal
6、lowedintheoldcity),typicallyaspartofpackagetours.Eveningsintheoldcitycanbeparticularlyrowdy,notleastduetothemanyoutdoorbars,whereboisterousgroupsoftouriststrytooutsingothergroups.LijiangisabeautifulshiningjewelontheNorthwestYunnanPlateauneighboringthesoutheastsideoftheTibetanPlateauwhichisconsidered
7、tobetheRoofoftheWorld.Itisimpressivebecauseofitssceneryandlushvegetation.Lijiangboastsofbreath-takingwonderfulsightssuchasJadeDragonSnowMountainanditsmodernmaritimeglacier,theonlyoneofitskindinthesouthernendoftheNorthernHemisphere;TigerLeapingGorge;theworld-famousgrandcanyon;LuguLake,theculturalcrad
8、leoftheMatriarchyoftheYongningMosuopeopleinNinglang.LijiangTownisofficiallycalledDayanTownDayanliterallymeansagreatinkstab,agraphicdescriptionofthetownslocationonapieceofrichflatlandfedbyariverandsurroundedbygreenmountains.ThereisnoothertowninChinalikeDayanwhichincorporatesthefolkwaysofsomanypeoplea
