3、能够真实的反映这种社会习俗及价值观念,而作为语言中的精华谚语更是浓缩了文化的内涵。英语谚语源远流长,记录了不同时代劳动人民的经验。它的来源极为广泛,从文学作品到民间传说,从宗教信仰到自然现象,不同时代,不同阶级人民的心得,经验及智慧都浓缩在当时的谚语中。因而从谚语中探索性别歧视更具有广泛的代表性和极强的说服性.笔者以女权主义为视角,侧重于对性别歧视在英语谚语中的现象进行研究。本文运用对比法从言语类、角色类、理性类、容止类、婚嫁类、性情类和其它类七个方面阐述性别歧视在英语谚语中的具体体现,并且从社会分工、文化因素、历史背景和宗教心理四个不同的角度分析了性别歧视的形成原因。目的是通过对谚语的分析揭

4、示语言中对女性的歧视,从而提高人们关于性别歧视的意识,帮助人们减少,继而消除在日常生活以及语言中的性别歧视现象,也期待为今后的进一步研究能有所帮助。关键词:英语谚语;性别歧视;女权主义AbstractLanguage, as a mirror of the real world, could give us a vivid reflection of social customs and values. The proverbs, the essence of language, are actually a pure concentration of the entire content o

5、f culture. With a long history and their ancient origins, English proverbs stem from the accumulation of experience, which has been handed down through generations. From literature to folk legends, from religious beliefs to natural phenomena, the broad scope of proverbs covers all understanding, exp

6、erience and wisdom of the people who have lived in different times and from the different classes. Thus a proverb is a more representative and more persuasive perspective to make a research on sex discrimination. The thesis aims at specializing in sex discrimination reflected in the English proverbs

7、 from the feminist perspective.The thesis has probed into the phenomenon through a comparative study of the proverbs applied in languages from the different aspects. And the thesis has also investigated into the causes of sexism from four aspects: social division, cultural factor, history background

8、, religious psychology; revealing the sex bias against women in vocabulary so as to enhance peoples awareness about sexism as well; trying to find out solutions to help people reduce and even eliminate the sexism in the daily linguistic expressions and lay a solid foundation for further research in

9、this field of study.Key words: English Proverbs,Sexism,Feminism Sexism in English Proverb1 Introduction According to Webster Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary, “sexism” is prejudice or discrimination based on sex; esp. discrimination against women. While in Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary of Curre

10、nt English, “sexism” is defined as unfair or unreasonable discrimination between the sexes; unreasonable maintaining of traditional sexual rules (e.g. that men are strong and women are weak).Therefore, sexism is a system of beliefs and practices that affirm the dominance of men over women. Apprehend

11、ed by most people as only natural, sexism pervades social relations and institutions, affecting everything from peoples domestic arrangement to their career choices. With the arrival of the feminist movement within English speaking countries, attention has been given to changing the structures which

12、 support and promote sexism within the society. One of these structures is language.Sexism in language is the phenomenon that when you use the language, it shows discrimination against women. “Sexist language” has been defined as words, phrases, and expressions that unnecessarily differentiate betwe

13、en females and males or exclude, trivialize, or diminish either gender (Parks&Roberton, 1998, p.455). Theoretically, sexist language could have deleterious effects on either women or men, but empirical evidence in English spoken societies strongly suggests that the preponderance of negative results

14、accrue to women. Concern about the negative effects of sexist language is grounded in the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis of linguistic relativity, which suggests an affinity between language and culture (Cameron, 1985; Carroll, 1956; Simpson, 1993; Thorne, Kramarae,&Henley, 1983).Proverb is a special form o

15、f language, is one of the idiom. It is spread among the people with its visual common and meaningful sentences. It is also one form of folklore. Proverb is the crystal of mankind wisdom, is the embodiment of simple language. The linguists vividly compare it to the mirror of a nation, live fossil of language.
