2、inlovewithayoungman,ArmandDuval,andthentriestoescapefromherquestionablepast.Unfortunately,itcomesbacktohauntherandsheendsupreturningtothatlifeanddiespainfullyandalone,butwiththeknowledgethatshewasanoblewomanatheart.WhenIfirstbegantoreadthebook,IdidnotcareforMargueriteorherattitudeorlifestyle,butasIg
3、otfurtherintothenarrative,Irealizedthathersaucyattitudewasafronttocoverthelonelywomanthatshereallywas.Shefeltused,abusedandunloved,untilthegentleArmandDuvalcameintoherlifeandshowedherthathelovedherasapersonandnotforwhatshecoulddoforhim.ItmusthavetakengreatcourageforMargueritetoleavethelifeshehadlive
4、dforsolong,knowingallalongthatitwasprobablytoogoodtobetrueandwouldnotlastindefinitely.AnditalsoshowedthatMargueritereallylovedArmandDuvalforshecouldevenchangeherselfforhim. However,happinessdidntlastforlong.WhenM.Duval,Armandsfather,cametoher,pleadingforhertoleaveArmandtosavebothArmandsreputationand
5、thatofhisyoungerinnocentsister,Margueritesawawaytobecomepureofheart,ifnotinbody.Shefeltthatitwasherduty,becauseshelovedArmandsomuch,todothiseventhoughitmeantgivingupherownhappinessandhurtingArmandtemporarily.Shereluctantlyreturnedtoherformerlife,knowingthatsomedayArmandwouldforgiveher.Sadly,shediedi
6、ndebtandbasicallyalone,exceptforheronefemalefriend,JulieDuprat,whohelpedherduringherillness.ShehadherjournalsenttoArmandafterherdeath,explainingwhyshehadmadethechoicesshehad.IthinkDumasslastfewlinesaboutMargueritebeingtheexception,nottherulewerequitetrue,andIalsoagreedwithhisviewthatwhileherlifestyl
7、ecouldnotbecondoned,weasasocietyassumethatallofthesetypeofwomenarecoldandheartless,whilethismaynotalwaysbethecase.Apersoncanmakethewrongchoicesinlifewhentheyareyoung,andtrytoredeemthemselves,butsometimespastsituationspreventthemfromchangingtheirlives,eventhoughtheydesperatelywishtodoso.Thisappliesto
8、bothmenandwomeninmanydifferenttypesofcircumstances:involvementincrime;drugoralcoholabuse;gambling;prostitution;financialproblems;poormarriagechoices;etc.Andthisisthefact,whichexistsinthewholesociety. Asfarastheothercharactersinthebook,IthinkMargueritewasrightinsayingthatnoonetrulycaredabouther,buton
9、lywantedsomethingfromher,theonlyexceptionsbeingArmandandJulieDuprat.Ofcourse,theComtedeG.andComtedeN.wantedherbodyandappearance.TheDukeneededto“wakeupandsmellthecoffee”andrealizethatshecouldneverreplacehisdeaddaughter.Ifhetrulycared,hecouldhavehelpedherleaveherlifestylewithout“keeping”herhimself.And
10、lastly,Prudencewasablood-suckingleechwhousedMargueritealmostworsethanthemen.IalsothinkshewasjealousofthefactthatMargueritehadsomuchmorecouragethanherselfandsomeonetrulylovedher.
