1、英汉数字词语文化内涵比较研究 中南民族大学 硕士学位论文 英汉数字词语文化内涵的比较研究 姓名艾平 申请学位级别硕士 专业外国语言学及应用语言学 指导教师张立玉 20060511 A Comparative Study of Culture Connotation of Numerals in English and Chinese 摘 要 数字词用于表示数目是所有语言中的共同现象任何民族都离不开数的概 念和计数的需要 随着人类社会的进步数字词与人们的生产斗争科学试验 社会生活的各个方面的关系更加紧密数字词在语言中也得到了相应的发展 本文针对英汉两种语言中的含有数字的表达进行了分析对比研究了数
2、字词 在其中的各种功能从两种文化之间的差别折射出两种语言的文化差异从而 揭示了跨文化交际的重要性 通过对诸多含有数字词的表达的分析笔者发现数字词在观点上以及数字结 构和修辞上有很多相同点和不同点相同点是英语和汉语都用数字词来表达数量 大小在语法功能上数字词既可以做名词 形容词又可以做副词和动词等 两种语言含数字的表达都含有一些传奇和历史典故而且常跟特定的环境 地点 标志着文化特征的重要的人 物 事相关联不同点在于英语和汉语对数字组 合 邻位数 双数 倍数 大位数字词的用法上存在差异在修辞手法上 数字词用来表示形象 夸张 委婉禁忌及象征的意义和重点在两种语言中也 截然不同虽然两种语言都使用数字词
3、来比喻但语言当中数字词的不同使用源 自于两种文化不同的文化内涵与历史积淀所以表达上各自都有独特方式因为 语言文化各异 不同文化中人们的价值观 思维方式和传统习俗各异所以在 数字词的使用上也受到一定的影响因为它们部分承载着各自民族的历史文化特 征 关于数字词的模糊性问题作者在总结国内外专家学者的研究成果的基础上 对此进行了粗浅的研究数字词通常被认为是最精确的语言一是一 二是二何来模糊但在实际应用中除了准确的计数功能外很多情 况下他们的意义确实是模糊的在介绍模糊概念之后本文对数词的模糊意义 进行了分类1单个整数尤其是作为认知参照点的10或5的倍数的数字词 倾向于表达模糊意义2数字词的复数形式表达的
4、是模糊意义而非精确意义 这在英语中更为常见3如果两个精确数词并列在一起连用英语中需用or 连接那么他们的意义便由精确转为模糊4带有近似标记的数字词总是表 达模糊意义5成语中的数字词大部分由于历史文化的沉淀已经失去了准 确的计数功能从而变得模糊 在英汉两种文化中由于人们的认知方式 所处环境 宗教信仰 历史背 景等各有异同因而影响了英汉数字词模糊意义的异同在英语和汉语中一 IV 中南民族大学硕士学位论文 二 三都为数字词中的小数目词所以都可以用来指少而日 常生活中事物都由一数起故两种文化中一都具有起点 整 体 相同之意相对于一二三来说四以上的数词 特别是百千万等都是大数目词所以都可以用来指多三 是
5、数字词中的分水岭在不同的语言环境下它有时指多有时指少 这在两种语言中都是相同的然而由于计数单位的不同英语常用million 来表达数量之多汉语则用万ten thousand由于不同宗教的影响英 语中的seven七常表示多汉语则用九nine不同文化中的 历史典故赋予了某些数字词不同的模糊意义 关键词 数字 对比 模糊性 文化内涵 V A Comparative Study of Culture Connotation of Numerals in English and Chinese ABSTRACT This paper is a comparative study of expressio
6、ns related to numerals in Chinese and English The author will investigate the different functions of numerals used in these expressions reveal the differences between the two cultures and the language divergence reflected in the expressions and lastly point out the importance of intercultural commun
7、ication After various aspects of numerals are compared similarities and differences between the expressions are found In terms of grammatical function numerals can be used as nouns adjectives adverbs and so on Historical events and incidents are found in expressions of both languages frequently rela
8、ted to people objects stories and other culturally relevant things The differences can be found respectively in the combinations of numerals neighboring numerals double numerals and large numerals Rhetorically numerals are used as metaphor hyperbole euphemism taboo and symbol in different ways for d
9、ifferent emphases Though both languages use numerals metaphorically the different usage and unique expressions reveal their cultural and historical contents Due to the divergence in language and culture people s value attitudes thought patterns and traditional customs the use of numerals in expressi
10、ons is affected In terms of vagueness of numerals the author makes a tentative study of them from many different aspects Numerals are often thought to be precise one is one and two is two where does the vagueness come from Actually they are employed with vague meanings in many cases except functioni
11、ng as exact counting After introducing the concept of vagueness vague numerals are classified into five types in Chapter 4 of this thesis 1 Numerals standing for round numeral are susceptible to be interpreted vaguely 2 Plural numerals express vague meanings instead of precise quantities 3 Two preci
12、se numerals when they are used consecutively or connected by or will become vague 4 Numerals with approximate marks always express vague meanings 5 Most numerals involved in idioms have lost their function of counting and become vague There are both similarities and differences between the vague meanings of English and Chinese numerals for which the influence of culture on language can
