This is a mot written in my diary, which is extracted from one of the most famous novels all over the world The Old Man and the Sea. It is one of Hemingways most endurin
2、g works and may become one of the true classics of this generation. What the novel describes is mainly about the experience of an almost sixty years old fisherman named Santiago. Once he went to the sea and fish alone, he drew a blank during first 84 days. One day, he had already angled to a big fis
3、h, but he cannot draw it up. After the dogged fisherman and fish had fought for several days, he finally succeeded in stinging it to death. And he found it was a big marlin which exceeded several times of ones own fishing boat. Though he knew perfectly well that it was very difficult for him to win,
4、 he did not give up yet. He tied the big marlin to one side of the small boat. Unfortunately, the big marlins fish fishlike smell of wound attracted odd herds of shark vying for food at once. Faced with strong shark, the old man was still unwilling to give up. The old fisherman thought that it was r
5、eally too close from here to coast, perhaps there were bigger fish in the farther place, so he stock to struggle. At last, the big marlin was only left bone. Whats more, Santiago is the symbol of perfect personality that Hemingway advocates. There is so much virtue we can find from him, such as tena
6、city, responsibility, spirit and benevolence and so on. The reason he can successfully mold this kind of figure is related to his own experience. The First World War changed Hemingways radical attitude to human society. The cruel wars, the hypocritical dominators and the sanguinary tragedy forced hi
7、m to give up his original goal to save the democracy all over the world. In his opinion, the whole world was full of force, and death was inescapable to everyone. Thats why the hero Santiago cannot get rid of tragic fate. Therefore, in order to survive the society, he thought he must constitute a se
8、t of subsistence principle: one should not give up in life, even though cannot win. And you should try your best to exist by abiding dumbly. Santiago was just the annotation of this principle. He was doomed to fail, but he still showed an adamant attitude of tough guy to lifeAfter 84-days nothing to
9、 gain, he still stock to fish. When faced with big shark, he still did not give up, but to struggle with it. Hemingway was not only narrating a story simply, but also combining the story with his own experience, thoughts and emotion.And although The Old Man and The Sea narrates a very simple story,
10、it has multiple themes. Firstly, it tells us that death is an unavoidable reality, the only thing that everybody affirms and only security we can ensure. In Hemingways view, death is unavoidable and its arrival is just a question of time. So death itself is not important. The problem is when we face
11、 death what attitude we should take. Although human strength is limited, the most important thing is the attitude of life. A man should pay attention to death, but man should try his best to avoid meaningless death. Secondly, we know from The Old Man and The Sea that the tragedy in human life is ete
12、rnal and the battle with perseverance is also eternal. It is not a kind of abreaction after being defeated, instead it is a kind of thinking with optimism after being destroyed. “A man can be destroyed, but cannot be defeated.” Although Life is transitorily , and there are many difficulties in it, b
13、ut we could not give up. We should insist on it until the final victory. Finally, we can get a kind of rational thought about human and nature. Human is negligible in vast universe, bur in fact we should build a harmonious relationship between human and nature. To sum up, The Old Man and The Sea is the summary of Hemingway life. It has multiple themes and an unfailing charm.
