1、Foreword The author of the widely circulated web article “ 如何用英语形容女孩子的美貌和身材” claimed “ 在中文里我们有很多形容美女的词汇或成语, 如天姿国色，沉鱼落雁, 倾国倾城, 闭月羞花等等 英语中用来形容女孩子的字眼也不少, 但跟中文比起来就真的是小巫见大巫了.” I do not know which language has more, but 小巫见大巫 is definitely not the case. The author gave seven examples (chick, gorgeous, bab
2、e, turns me on, hottie, well-developed, and cute), but failed to come up with anything resembling 天姿国色，沉鱼落雁, 倾国倾城. I hate people making disparaging remarks of a language, whether it be Chinese, English, or any other, just because of their own ignorance. Although my English is far from perfect, I dec
3、ided on writing my own version of 如何用英语形容女孩子, so people would know there is no lack of English words for describing the fairer sex. The Yeti, March 11, 2011. The following is based on my 2006 much shorter Rainlane version. First, yes, there are similar phrases in English, and NOT translations from C
4、hinese, for ” 天姿国色，沉鱼落雁, 倾国倾城. E.g. For 天姿国色, one can use heavenly beauty (e.g, She is a heavenly beauty/ she is heavenly/She is heavenly beautiful), angelic, unearthly (e.g. unearthly beautiful), and goddess (as in “She is a goddess.”) Similar to 天姿国色 and 獨一無二的, 无以伦比, words that come to mind at the
5、 spur of the moment include unique, one-of-a-kind, unsurpassing/unsurpassable, has no equal, unequaled, incomparable, unmatched/unmatchable, second to none, and unrivaled. Example: Her beauty is unequaled/unmatchable/unique in all the land. Beware: 金山词霸 incorrectly put 天姿国色 as “ surpassing beauty.”
6、“ Reigning beauty” is not 天姿国色 either. 沉鱼落雁: Drop-dead gorgeous. Drop-dead means extremely. (=You can die on the spot due to the shock of seeing such stunning beauty.) A face one could die for, Stunning/Stunningly beautiful Note: “ She could charm the birds from the trees” does not mean she has 沉鱼落雁
7、之容 , but that she can sweet-talk the birds into coming down from the trees, or has the 迷力 to do so. 更多信息请访问：http:/ to shut out the moon make fish sink and geese settle” are good translations, but not what we are looking for here. 倾国倾城. The face that launched a thousand ships is a reference to Helen
8、of Troy in Homers Iliad. 荷马史诗中的 特洛伊的海伦.In the Epic, Helen is the femme-fatale that caused the fall of Troy. (femme-fatale 致命的女人 or 红颜祸水. ) E.g. She has a face that could launch a thousand ships. For 秀色可餐 , one can use she is a dish, although that is considered rather vulgar. Others: delectable, lusc
9、ious, mouth-watering, 养眼 a feast for the eyes/ a sight for sore eyes 出水芙蓉Venus rising from the sea.(also known as: Venus on a half shell) She is like a Venus rising from the sea. 她很丰满 . There are lots of English words for that! E.g. She is stacked/ well stacked. * Slang. Avoid using in formal situat
10、ions. Others: She has a great figure/an hourglass figure. She is curvaceous, well-built, well-proportioned, shapely, statuesque,(and many more.) 秀气 , 高雅 , 有气质 : elegant, classy, refined, graceful, cultured, chic, majestic, exquisite, polished (many more!) 性感 sexy, sensual, sensuous, seductive, hot,
11、titillating, erotic, voluptuous (as in: http:/ voluptuous Ukrainian nurse who accompanied everywhere Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, according to U.S. diplomatic cables revealed by Wikileaks, returned home Sunday, a Ukrainian television reported. 12、sing beauty and elegance. Uncompromising. In the context above, it means 100%. adj. Unwilling to grant concessions or negotiate; inflexible (AHD) 不妥协的, 强硬的, 不让步的She is hauntingly beautiful. Haunting adj. Continually recurring to the mind; unforgettable: a haunting melody. 常浮现于脑海中的, 不易忘怀的There are ma
