Andtoday were looking at thecultural side of London life and one area in particularwhich has many cultural events on offer.Our Learning English colleague, John Escolme recently me

2、tJude Woodward who is the adviser on culture to the Mayor ofLondon. John asked Jude if the area of London we aretalking about today is “the cultural heart” of London is it the most important part of London for cultural eventsand activities? As you listen try to catch the name of thearea of London we

3、 are talking about? JUDE WOODWARD Can we really say this is Londons cultural heart this area that were talking about theSouth Bank?Well I imagine some other areas might feel challenged bythat but I think its true. Anna: Well the name of the area is the South Bank which as its name suggests is situat

4、ed on the south side of theRiver Thames in the heart of London. Now that expression“in the heart of somewhere” means to be in the mostcentral part of it.Well as we heard earlier John asks Jude if the SouthBank is Londons cultural heart. What does she reply?Does she agree or disagree with John?Listen

5、 again.JUDE WOODWARD Can we really say this is Londons cultural heart this area that were talking about the SouthBank?Well I imagine some other areas might feel challenged bythat but I think its true.Anna: Jude agrees with John she says - “I thinkits true.” However she adds that “some other areasmig

6、ht feel challenged by that”. She thinks thatsome other “areas” or parts of London might not agreewith her and John they might feel challenged by it. Ifyou “challenge” ideas or people then you question theirtruth, value or authority. Anna: Jude goes on to talk about the South Bank area in more detail

7、. She describes it as “quite unique.” Ifsomething is “unique” then its the only thing of itskind. Jude describes the different cultural “venues” orplaces where cultural events happen on the South Bank. Tryto listen out for them and the different kindsof cultural activity that they offer.JUDE WOODWAR

8、DI think its quite unique, particularly that combination ofaround the South Bank the fact that you have a music venue,the Hayward Gallery which is an art gallery, youhave the National Film Theatre which is film, you have theNational Theatre then moving along youve got TateModern which has got one of

9、 the best collections of modernart. Youve got the Globe which gives you authenticShakespeare productions. Anna: Jude mentions various venues on the South Bank: theres a music venue which is the Royal Festival Hall andtwo art galleries the Hayward and the Tate Modern. Judesays that the Tate Modern ha

10、s “one of the best collectionsof modern art. The South Bank also has the National FilmTheatre or cinema and two theatres - the National Theatreand the Globe theatre. Listen again andthis time try to catch what kind of productions you can seeat the Globe theatre. JUDE WOODWARDI think its quite unique

Anna: Well at the Globe you can watch “authentic Shakespeare productions.” If something is described as“authentic” then it means it is real and genuine. So whyis the Globe authentic? Well the new Globe theatre is builto

13、n the site of the original Globe theatre, it is the samedesign as the original and produces plays written byEnglands most famous playwright William Shakespeare.So you cant get much more authentic than that! Jude endsby saying that there is nowhere else in the world like theSouth Bank where you can f

14、ind such an incredible “range”or wide choice of cultural events in a beautiful setting bythe river. And she adds thats “leaving aside” or noteven mentioning all the other fantastic things on offerthere such as shopping and restaurants. JUDE WOODWARD Where else in the world can you find such an incre

15、diblerange of artistic and cultural things on offer leavingaside the restaurants, the other things, the shopping thosesorts of things which are available there. Nowhere else inthe world has that and particularly not on such a fantasticriverside setting. Anna: That”s all from this edition of London life, now I might just wander down to theSouth Bank to see whats going on .
