BATTLEFIELD, JENKINS FERRY(渡口), ARKANSAS - DAYHeavy grey skies hang over a flooded field, the water two feet deep. Cannons and carts, half-submerged(淹在水中的)and tilted(倾斜的), their wheels tra

2、pped in the mud below the surface, are still yoked(给上毂)to dead and dying horses and oxen. A terrible battle is taking place; two infantry companies, Negro Union soldiers and white Confederate soldiers, knee deep in the water, staggering(难以置信的)because of the mud beneath, fight each other hand-to-hand

3、, with rifles, bayonets(刺刀), pistols, knives and fists. Theres no discipline or strategy, nothing depersonalized: its mayhem(大混乱)and each side intensely hates the other. Both have resolved to take no prisoners.HAROLD GREEN (V.O.)Some of us were in the Second Kansas Colored. We fought the rebs(南军士兵)a

4、t Jenkins Ferry last April, just after theyd killed every Negro soldier they captured at Poison Springs.EXT. PARADE GROUNDS ADJACENT TO THE WASHINGTON NAVY YARD, ANACOSTIA RIVER - NIGHTRain and fog. Union Army companies are camped out across the grounds. Preparations are being made for the impending

ABRAHAM LINCOLN sits on a bench facing Harold and Ira; his stovepipe

The ones of us that didnt die that day, we joined up with the 116th U.S. Colored, sir. From Camp Nelson Kentucky.LINCOLNWhats your name, soldier?HAROLD GREEN

7、Private Harold Green, sir.IRA CLARKIm Corporal Ira Clark, sir. Fifth Massachusetts Cavalry. Were waiting over there.(He nods in the direction of his cavalry.)IRA CLARK (CONTD)Were leaving our horses behind,and shipping out with the 24th Infantry for the assault next week on Wilmington.LINCOLN(to Har

8、old Green:)How longve you been a soldier?HAROLD GREENTwo year, sir.LINCOLNSecond Kansas Colored Infantry, they fought bravely at Jenkins Ferry.HAROLD GREENThats right, sir.IRA CLARKThey killed a thousand rebel soldiers, sir. They were very brave. (hesitating, then) And making three dollars less each

9、 month than white soldiers.Harold Green is a little startled(受惊吓的)at Clarks bluntness(直率).HAROLD GREENUs 2nd Kansas boys, whenever we fight now we -IRA CLARKAnother three dollars subtracted(减去)from our pay for our uniforms.HAROLD GREENThat was true, yes sir, but that changed -IRA CLARKEqual pay now.

11、es to seeing Negro men with guns, fighting on their behalf, and now that they can tolerate Negro soldiers getting the same pay - in a few years perhaps they can abide the idea of Negro lieutenants and captains. In fifty years, maybe a Negro colonel. In a hundred years - the vote.(Greens offended at

12、the way Clark is talking to Lincoln.)LINCOLNWhatll you do after the war, Corporal Clark?IRA CLARKWork, sir. Perhaps youll hire me.LINCOLNPerhaps I will.IRA CLARKBut you should know, sir, that I get sick at the smell of bootblack and I cant cut hair.(Lincoln smiles.)LINCOLNIve yet to find a man could
