WHAT IS PEER TUTORING?Peer tutoring is a teaching strategy that we all have used at one point or another in our academic lives. We use it by choice or because a teacher suggests that w

2、e use it. Peer tutoring is basically when students teach other students. In this paper I am going to concentrate on peer tutoring that involves students of the same age. Firstly, I am going to illustrate the different reasons that lead to peer tutoring being used, by giving some examples of peer tut

3、oring. You see there are various reasons that might lead to students needing a tutor. Given a choice, students are more likely to opt for a peer tutor rather than a professional tutor. The reasons students resist a professional tutor can be: knowing the family can not afford one, they do not want to

4、 be embarrassed by admitting they are having problems in school, they might be intimidated by having someone older than them helping them and they might find it difficult to relate to someone who is not their peer. When one decides to ask a peer for help, they will usually ask someone they have conf

5、idence knows the material and will be able to help them. The reasons students might need a tutor are as follows: - falling behind in class because they do not understand the subject matter, falling behind because they do not understand the teacher, they are slow learners, they learn using a differen

6、t method from the one the teacher uses, they have missed a lot of classes and finally, language might be barrier if the student and the teacher do not share a common language.Case 1- Problems with teacher.I am in Mr. Robinsons chemistry class and I am falling half asleep because I am bored out of my

7、 mind. All through high school I loved chemistry but this year, boy has it been hard! The man who stands in front of me is a little eccentric. He tends to trail off the subject matter we are meant to be learning and just go off on a tangent. This makes it hard to keep up with him because I really do

8、 not know what is relevant to the class and what is not. In addition, Mr. Robinson is a soft talker so one has to strain to hear him. This was not too difficult during the first couple of weeks, but once people discovered they could talk in his class, it has become hard to hear him above all the tal

9、king. Mr. Robinsons philosophy is straightforward, we pay to be in school, we need to pass his class therefore, it is our own responsibility to pay attention. I have been told this man is a genius. Well some genius he is! We are mostly failing his class! What is he doing teaching high school anyway,

10、 if he is indeed so smart?There is one student in the class, Chipo, who seems to always have her homework done. She really must be weird. Hey, it is not that I am a bad student, actually the contrary is true. I have been trying to understand the material but to no avail. In the beginning I tried to

11、keep up but now it is just so overwhelming. I think it is because of the fancy terms that Mr. Robinson uses in class. I am embarrassed to say that I do not know them; I think it might make me look stupid and dumb.As time progresses I realize that unless I come up with an innovated way to get through

12、 this class, I am going to fail. I need to pass because I need to maintain good grades for College. I look at Chipo then suddenly realize that she is the answer to my prayer.After class I approach Chipo and ask her if she can help me with my Chemistry and she agrees. The first thing she does, is giv

13、e me a list of key terms that I need to know in order to do well in the class. She stresses the importance for me to know them off by heart. She also advises me to revise my work before we meet and later on after our meeting for enhanced clarity. Our meeting time is in the afternoon, after school. T

14、he initial meetings were one sided, with Chipo doing all the talking. After a while I began to be more critical and started to ask more questions, which lead to our meetings becoming more interactive. There were instances when we would go back and forth, about why something was the way it was but in

15、 the end Chipo was always able to prove her answer to me. She used examples that I was familiar with and that I could picture, which made it easier to grasp the material. If it were not for Chipo tutoring me, I would not have done well in my Chemistry class.Case 2- Language being a barrierJacqueline

16、 Guerrier sits uncomfortably in her chair. Even though she is trying to be as still as possible, she does not seem to know how to stop fidgeting. This is her first day in school in this strange new country. She is all alone and without friends. She curses her mother for sending for her from Haiti, to come and live with her in America.
