2、.DescriptionandinterpretationofthepoemTheBuildingisafamouspoemwrittenbyPhilipLarkin.Ithasnineseven-linestanzasplusasinglefinalline.ItiswrittenintypicalLarkinsstyle,withplainlanguageandroughiambicpentameter.Againitstartswithsomethingcommonindailylife,andthenmovesontosomethingveryserious.AlthoughLarki
3、ndoesntdefinitivelymentionthepurposeofthisbuilding,throughhisdescriptionwecanfindthisisahospital.Inthefirststanza,Larkincomparesthebuildingwithwhatisarounditandsaysthebuildingishigherthanthehandsomesthotel.Thismodernbuildingrisesoutofthesuburbanenvironmentinsharpcontrast.Aroundthebuildingisthe“close
4、-ribbedstreets.Thepoetusessimilehereandsaysthatthe“riseandfallofstreetsare“likeagreatsigh,whichisveryvivid.Fromthesecondtothefifthstanzathepoetturnshiseyesuponthepeopleinsidethebuilding.Larkinisstillunwillingtomentionthatthisplacehedescribesisthewaitingroominthehospital.Instead,hesaysitis“likeanairp
5、ortlounge,and“morelikealocalbus.Fromwhathedescribesweseesomepeoplewhoaredoingdifferentthings.Obviouslythesepeoplearepatients,sotheywaitfor“akindofnursetofetchsomeoneaway.Instanza6,thepoetreturnstotheexteriorofthebuilding.Helooksoutfromtheinsideandseestheyard,redbrick,laggedpipesandotherthings.Formhi
6、sdescriptionwefindaworldwhichisquitedifferentfromtheoneinsidethebuilding.Itseemsthattheoutsideworldisveryfaroff.Further,instanza7,theworldisevensaidtobe“beyondthestretch/Ofanyhandfromhere.Thepoetincludeshimselfintheconditionofthepeopleinthebuilding:the“lovesand“chancesoftheworldarebeyondthereachando
7、nlya“touchingdreamtowhichwearealllulled.Theneveryonewill“wakefromthatdream“separately.Afterawakeningfromthatdream,nowwhattheyconfrontisterribledeathinthisbuilding.Stanza8shiftsbackfromtheoutsideworldtothepeopleinthebuilding.Somepatientsarebeckonedbythenursesothey“getsupandgoes/Atlast.Somearestillwai
8、tingforthebeckonand“willbeoutbylunch,orfour.Ofcoursetherewillbemorepatientsjoininginthequeue,asthepoetsays,“Others,notknowingit,havecometojoin/Theunseencongregations.Thesenseofuncertaintyremainsbecausewhattheywillfaceisstillunknowntothem.So,instanza9,thepoetcontinuestodescribethepeopleinthebuilding.
9、Thistimethesenseofuncertaintygraduallydisappearsbecause“Allknowtheyaregoingtodie.Perhapstheywillnotdieimmediatelyatthisplace,however,intheendtheywilldiein“somewherlikethis.Thisisthefateallhumankindshavetofaceoneday.Nowitisclearthatthispoemisadetaileddescriptionofahospital,focusingonthepatientsinthew
10、aitingroom.Thepoetstartswithexternalfeaturesofthisbuilding,thendescribetherowsofpatientssittinginwaitingrooms,andfinallyrevealstherealissue:“Allknowtheyaregoingtodie.Wevisualizeeachpatientasheorshedisappearsintoanexaminationroom,butwhatliesbehindthedoorremainsamystery.Allweknowisthat“nothingcontrave
11、nes/Thecomingdark.2.evaluationofthepoemThesubjectofdeathhasalwaysbeenaconcernoftheworldsliterature.Somewritersholdapositiveviewtowardsdeath.However,tosomewriters,deathismysteriousandterrible.ItisobviousthatPhilipLarkinsharesthelatter.Inthispoemadescriptionofahospitalbecomesameditationondeath,whichis
12、mysterious,terrifyingandinevitable.Insteadofasignofhopeandapositiveinterventionsustaininglife,thehospitalheraldsdeath.Larkinisabletotakeaparticularexperienceorcircumstanceandfindageneraltruthinit.Histoneiscoolandhisemotionsareincheckthereisnoragehereagainstthedeath.Behindthisindividualpoemlieshisawa
13、renessthatlifeisultimatelyempty.Inmyopinion,hisfeelingresultsfromfear,anxietyanddisappointmenttothemodernsociety.Hisacceptanceofimpendingdeathcauseshimtoseetheeverydaypursuitsofpeople,includinghimself,withironyandsadness.Justasheputsit,“Allknowtheyaregoingtodie.Thereisnodifferencebetweengreatandcomm
14、onpeople.Nomatterwhatsomeonedidwhilealive,orwhattheirstatushappenedtobe,everyonewilleventuallyendupinthesameplacethegrave.Deathisourcommonfatethathasthepowertorenderlifemeaningless.Itseemsthatallourbusyconcernsisjustawayoffillingtimeuntildeathtakesusawaytoemptynothingness.Thispoembecomesalamentforthenatureofthehumanstruggle.Afterreadingthispoem,wemayreflectonthenatureofhumanmortality,thelossthatdeathwillbringandhowitwilldestroyeveryuniqueperson.
