Nowadays, there has appeared a tendency ofanalyzing and evaluating translations under this theoretical framework. This thesis is anattempt to st
2、udy the translation of the classical Chinese poem Song You Ren from theperspective of Systemic Functional Grammar.To testify the feasibility of Systemic Functional Grammar applied in appreciating thepoems translations, this thesis explores the realization of three meta- functions of thepoem as well
3、as its ten translated versions. To be specific, the original poem and its tenEnglish versions are considered as texts and this paper probes into the ir realization of thethree meta-functions in terms of transitivity, lo gical relations, mood structure, thematicstructure and cohesion of the texts, an
4、d gives a descriptive criticism of these texts.The thesis finds out to some extent the theoretical framework of Systemic FunctionalGrammar works well with the analyses of the translations. In the realization of ideationalfunction, most translators stick to the mainstream of the process types as well
5、 as logicalrelations, showing that they manage to represent similar experiences depicted in theoriginal poem. Still some shifts exist and explanations are given in the paper. Compared tothe realization of ideational function, more shifts exist in translations in realizinginterpersonal and textual fu
6、nctions due to different characteristics of Chinese and English.By applying the framework of three meta- functions in Systemic Functional Grammar, it ispossible to offer a systematic appreciation of the original poem and its translations from amore comprehensive and scientific perspective.Systemic F
7、unctional Grammar not only provides a new angle for translation studies ofclassical Chinese poems, but also helps to guide poetry translation practice. Still,limitations of applying this approach to poetry translation also exist and they are listed inthe last part in this paper.Key Words: Systemic F

Given the important role of poetry playing in theformation of culture, there is a long history of poetry translation around the world.Nevertheless, due to the distinct features of poetry like sound, forms and images,poetry translation has long been questioned by some scholars and regarded as t
11、he mostchallenging translation task. Though these unique features of poetry lay tremendousobstacles on its translation, still a great number of translators as well as poets have madeunremitting efforts on it (Ren & Yu, 2006).Numerous researches have been conducted on poetry translation by translator
12、s andlinguistic scholars home and abroad. Andre Lefevere suggests seven strategies for poetrytranslation and later proposes five principles that are used to regulate translation processof poetry translators (Leech, 2001). Ezra Pound, the well-known poet as well astranslator in America, formulated hi
13、s opinions about poetry translation through richtranslating practice. His theory stresses emphasis on precise transference of meaningsfrom the original to the translated version including individual words and evenfragmented images (Li, 2005). In China, scholars focus more on rendering of theaestheti
14、c effects and the spirit of the original poem. Here, several theories are listed:Yanfus “Faithfulness, Expressiveness, Elegance, Fu Leis “Spirit Resemblance, QianZhongshus “Sublimation, Xu Yuanchongs “Three BeautiesPrinciple, etc (Xu, 2000).Affected by these theories, most of researches on poetry tr
