Hungary has its czardas, Brazil is famous for the bossa nova, Caribbean countries for the merengue, and Argentina for the tan

2、go. The U. S. is known for jazz, a pletely original type of music that has gained world-wide popularity. Jazz is Americas contribution to popular music. In contrast to classical music, which follows formal European traditions, jazz is spontaneous and free-form. It bubbles with energy, expressing the

3、 moods, interests, and emotions of the people. Brash, uninhibited, exciting, it has a modern sound. In the 1920s jazz sounded like America. And so it does today. The origins of this music are as interesting as the music itself. Jazz was invented by American Negroes, or blacks, as they are called tod

4、ay, who were brought to the Southern states as slaves. They were sold to plantation owners and forced to work long hours in the cotton and tobacco fields. This work was hard and life was short. When a Negro died his friends and relatives formed a procession to carry the body to the cemetery. A band

5、often acpanied the procession. On the way to the cemetery the band played slow, solemn music suited to the occasion. But on the way home the mood changed. Spirits lifted. Everybody was happy. Death had removed one of their number, but the living were glad to be alive. The band played happy music, im

6、provising on both the harmony and the melody of the tunes presented at the funeral. This music made everyone want to dance. It was an early form of jazz. But there were other influences, too. Music has always been important in Negro life. ing mainly from West Africa, the blacks who were brought to A

7、merica already possessed a rich musical tradition. This music centered on religious ceremonies in which dancing, singing, clapping, and stamping to the beat of a drum were important forms of musical and rhythmic expression. As these people settled in to their new life in theplantations of the South,

8、 music retained its importance. In the fields, they made up work songs. Singing made the hard work go faster. And as the people were converted to Christianity, they posed lovely spirituals 12 which have bee a permanent part of American music. Another musical form which contributed to Jazz was the bl

9、ues. Blues songs always describe something sadan unhappy love affair, a money problem, bad luck. To this day, the expression“feeling blue”means being sad or depressed. In fact, there was hardly any activity or social event that could not be set to Music. Weddings, births, christenings, funerals, pic

10、nics, paradesall had their musical acpaniment. After the American Civil War(18601865), the Negroes had gained their freedom and were ready for a new type of music, one that would preserve their musical traditions but be fast and happy to express their new-found freedom. They wanted something they co

11、uld play as professional musicians for both black and white audiences. Jazz was the answer. It bined themes from Negro work songs, spirituals and blues, set to a fast beat, with the musicians improvising as they went along, like the funeral marching bands. To be good, a musician had not only to reme

12、mber his part but also to be able to invent new variations on the spur of the moment. Jazz belongs to the people, but popular taste is changeable. Jazz had to keep up to date. Over the last half century it has changed many times in form, style, and tempo. Each change added something new. . American

13、Country MusicAmerican music includes classical music and popular music. American country music is also called country and western music, which belongs to popular music. It originates from early traditional style of nation in scotland, Ireland and England. It is also influenced by western music of Am

14、erica and rock music. Musical position is written and played by local singers and players of musical instruments. Country music and rock music became the main aspect of popular music in America in the 1960s. Country and western music is played by some musical instruments, such as guitar, drum and vi

15、olin, etc. The range of music itself is not wide, but its rhythm bees intense because of being influenced by rock and other music. The subject of a song mainly refers to the joy of love, the mercy of religion, etc. 二、知识归纳(一)“不能转换被动结构的场合”归纳绝大多数带宾语的及物动词都可以从主动语态变成被动语态。但在下列情况下则不能转换。(1)受动词的限制表示状态的及物动词。这类

16、动词有:hold(容纳), own(拥有), owe(归属), suit(适合), contain(包括), cost(花费), lack(缺少), love(爱),hate(恨), have(有), last(持续)等。不能转换成被动语态。e. g. We have a new house. 我们有座新房子。The great hall holds 2 000 people. 这个大厅能容纳2 000人。The paper will last me a whole term. 这纸够我一学期用。have表示“吃(饭)”“患(病)”“明白”“知道”等意思时,没有被动语态。e. g.
